Best of 2016-17: Fall Highlights

COLCHESTER, Vt. - Here are some of the Saint Michael's College Athletics teams' highlights from the 2016-17 school year, beginning with the fall of 2016.

September 3, 2016 – Senior Aaron DaCosta scores the lone goal in the 85th minute, and men's soccer downs Stonehill, 1-0, to claim its second Catholic Cup crown in four years. Junior Daniel du Feu makes eight saves, and senior Nolan Villeneuve is named MVP.

September 4, 2016 – Women's cross country wins the season-opening Shacklette Invitational, while the men take second. Four women are among the top eight, with first-year Abby French (2nd) leading the way. Senior Ross Henry also places second for the men.

September 7, 2016 – Women's tennis defeats Saint Anselm, 6-3, for the first victory of Mark Ellingson's college coaching career. Senior Riley Kruger registers the clinching singles win, as she and first-years Abby Ramsay and Caroline Sumner all win twice. [ Kruger clinches victory ]

September 10, 2016 – Senior Alyssa Keeler and sophomore Sara Rooke both score in the 90th minute, and women's soccer stuns regionally-ranked Merrimack, 2-1. Sophomore Megan LeCours makes four stops. [ Highlights ] Women's volleyball downs Dominican and Felician by 3-0 scores to produce Jesse Carpenter's first college coaching wins. Sophomore Gabby Ratte drops 12 kills in the opener, while classmate Sarah Rodgers hands out 33 assists versus Felician.

September 18, 2016 – Behind two wins apiece from seniors Nicole Kellogg and Riley Kruger, junior Amelia Weeks, and first-year Abby Ramsay, women's tennis downs New Haven, 8-1.

September 27, 2016 – Junior Jenna Deschaine scores during the 90th minute of field hockey's 1-0 win at Franklin Pierce, its first in double overtime in 10 years. Senior Abigail Bowie makes 11 saves. [ Deschaine's winner ]

September 30, 2016 – Men's and women's cross country both finish third as hosts of the Vermont Intercollegiate Championship. First-year Abby French nabs third, while classmate Kevin Jeter is 11th.

October 3, 2016 – Men's golf first-year Matt Johnson's 70 strokes on the second day of the NE10 Championship are the fewest ever by a Purple Knight at the league meet, as he comes within three shots of the overall school mark. Johnson ties for 18th.

October 4, 2016 – Women's soccer senior Michaela Horne's free kick from 25 yards out in overtime fells regionally-ranked AIC, 1-0. Sophomore Megan LeCours stops seven shots. [ Horne's winner ]

October 8, 2016 – Sophomore Katie Costa wins twice while junior Melissa Hickox is victorious in her college debut in women's tennis' 6-3 win over American International. Senior Marissa Landry sides with Costa for the doubles victory.

October 9, 2016 – Senior Abby Dusha produces a natural hat trick during field hockey's 4-0 win over Mercy. Sophomore Nicole White also tallies, and senior Abigail Bowie makes one stop. [ Highlights ]

October 11, 2016 – Women's volleyball sophomore Mairin King records 11 kills and two blocks, and classmate Sarah Rodgers has 19 assists and 18 digs in a 3-1 win over Southern New Hampshire.

October 22, 2016 – Senior Aaron DaCosta scores twice, and classmate Taylor Wallace – an emergency starter in goal – makes four saves in men's soccer's 2-1 win at Bentley. [ Highlights ]

October 24, 2016 – Men's golf sophomore Tucker Buteau and first-year Matt Johnson both shoot a second-round 79 at the NEIGA Championship. Buteau ties for 33rd during the tournament.

October 25, 2016 – Senior Aaron DaCosta scores his 21st career goal in men's soccer's 1-1 draw with Saint Rose. DaCosta eventually finishes his career fourth in program history in both goals and points (52). Classmate Taylor Wallace makes five saves. [ Highlights ]

October 26, 2016 – Senior Carolyn Avery nets the overtime winner in field hockey's 2-1 victory over American International in her final home game. Sophomore Morgan Johnston scores her first college goal, and senior Abigail Bowie makes five saves. [ Highlights ]

October 29, 2016 – Senior Allegra DiCesare's 41st-minute strike is the only scoring in women's soccer's 1-0 victory over Franklin Pierce. Sophomore Megan LeCours registers five saves. [ DiCesare's winner ] Senior Natalie Moore notches 17 digs against American International to breaks women's volleyball's record for career digs. [ Moore sets record ]

November 5, 2016 – Men's cross country registers its second straight top-15 showing at the NCAA East Regional Championship, placing 14th, while the women capture 17th. First-years Abby French (36th) and Kevin Jeter (53rd) pace each squad.

November 15, 2016 – The NCAA announces that, for the eighth consecutive year, Saint Michael's student-athletes achieve a 98 percent graduation rate, tying the College for second in Division II.
