Nearly Three Dozen Saint Michael's Student-Athletes Complete Study-Abroad Experiences in 2017-18

COLCHESTER, Vt. - A large contingent of Saint Michael's College students who have studied away from campus during the 2017-18 school year and this summer are also Purple Knight student-athletes, as 24 among the 109 who took advantage of the opportunity through the College's Study Abroad Office donned Purple and Gold during the academic year.

Five more gained experience through classes that have taken summer learning to different corners of the globe: "French Language and Quebecois Culture" (Canada), "Culture & Society in Medieval Burgundy" (France) and "A Study in Solidarity: Guyana." One other, women's basketball rising senior Samantha Delaney (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East), was part of the Saint Michael's Mobilization of Volunteer Efforts (MOVE) service trip to Kolkata, India, in May and June.

Women's Basketball

  • Rising senior Samantha Delaney (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) - Kolkata service trip (summer) - team's leader in scoring (12.7), rebounding (7.9) and free throw percentage (81.8%) while blocking 22 shots

Men's Cross Country

  • Rising senior David Baird (Higganum, Conn./Haddam-Killingworth) - Copenhagen, Denmark (spring) - among team's top four finishers at all six races
  • Rising senior Lance Reynolds (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) - Arusha, Tanzania (spring) - among team's scorers at two meets
  • Rising senior Nathan Terry (Reading, Mass./Tilton School) - France class (summer) - one of Purple Knights' top five finishers at all six meets during first year of college cross country

Women's Cross Country

  • Rising senior Emily Calder (Hopkinton, N.H./Hopkinton) - Queensland, Australia (spring) - one of team's top five finishers at all six races
  • Rising senior Ellen Emers (East Hardwick, Vt./Hazen Union), also Nordic skiing - Bath, England (spring) - competed at four cross country meets. Competed in November time trial for Nordic skiing before missing spring season while studying abroad
  • Rising senior Emily Kopacz (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) - Bath, England (spring) - competed in two races
  • Rising senior Kristen Stec (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) - Perth, Australia (spring) - scored at three meets, finishing sixth on team twice

Field Hockey

  • Rising senior Morgan Johnston (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport) - Salzburg, Austria (spring) - notched career highs of six goals and two assists while making 18 appearances, including 17 starts
  • Rising senior Katie Leonard (Carmel, N.Y./The Ursuline School) - Galway, Ireland (spring) - totaled one goal and two defensive saves while starting all 18 contests in a defensive capacity

Men's Golf

  • Rising senior Colin Gaunt (Queensbury, N.Y./Queensbury) - SEA Semester (spring) - broke 80 six times during fall season and had team-best tie for 16th place at Northeast-10 Conference Championship on Oct. 2-3 before studying abroad during spring season [blog entry]

Men's Ice Hockey

  • Rising junior John Barry (South Boston, Mass./Deerfield Academy) - London, England (summer) - career highs of six goals, eight assists and +6 in 20 games

Women's Ice Hockey

  • Rising junior Torrie Gray (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) - Guyana class (summer) - appeared in 26 of team's 27 games as defender

Women's Lacrosse

  • Rising senior Annie Martin (Mattapoisett, Mass./Bishop Stang) - Auckland, New Zealand (fall) - school-record 63 draw controls, 31 ground balls, 22 caused turnovers and one assist in 15 games, all starts
  • Rising senior Kate Martin (Mattapoisett, Mass./Bishop Stang) - Cape Town, South Africa (fall) - notched 13 goals, three assists, 31 draw controls, 13 caused turnovers and 12 ground balls in 15 games after missing prior season and a half due to injury

Alpine Skiing

  • Rising junior Megan Ahearn (Ringwood, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) - France class (summer) - competed in giant slalom (31st) and slalom (33rd) at Dartmouth College Carnival on Feb. 9-10
  • Rising junior Lauren Dunn (Truckee, Calif./Sugar Bowl Academy) - Darhad Valley, Mongolia (summer) - did not compete in any races

Nordic Skiing

  • Rising senior Amy Duclos (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) - Copenhagen, Denmark (spring) - top Saint Michael's finisher at November time trial before missing spring season to study abroad

Women's Soccer

  • Rising senior Danielle Easton (Southwick, Mass./Holyoke Catholic) - Florence, Italy (spring) - missed season due to injury
  • Rising senior Sarah Williams (Bronx, N.Y./The Ursuline School) - Prague, Czech Republic (spring) - defender was limited to eight games due to injury, making one start

Softball

  • Rising senior Anna Meusel (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxboro Regional) - Oxford, England (fall) - appeared in 20 games as a utility player, scoring six runs

Men's Swimming & Diving

  • Rising senior Seamus Butler (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) - Cork, Ireland (spring) - won four events in four meets before missing the second semester to study abroad
  • Rising senior Patrick Thornton (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) - Limerick, Ireland (spring) - won 10 events in four meets before missing second semester to study abroad

Women's Swimming & Diving

  • Rising senior Meg Flanagan (Middletown, R.I./The Prout School/Boston College) - Athens, Greece (summer) - won one event during season
  • Rising sophomore Meg Geschwind (Rochester, Minn./Mayo) - France class (summer) - won four events
  • Rising senior Tess Grimaldi (Higganum, Conn./Haddam-Killingworth) - Florence, Italy (spring) - won seven events in five meets before missing second semester while studying abroad

Men's Tennis

  • Rising senior Max Allen (Dennis, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth Regional) - Quebec class (summer) - appeared in four singles matches and four doubles matches

Women's Tennis

  • Rising senior Margaret de Pont (Norton, Mass./Bishop Feehan) - Dakar, Senegal (spring) - made all 14 of her singles appearances between No. 1 and 2 positions while posting 6-8 mark at No. 1 doubles during debut season of college tennis

Women's Volleyball

  • Rising junior Anna Lonczak (Pine Plains, N.Y./Stissing Mountain) - San José, Costa Rica (summer) - did not make any appearances during first season of college volleyball
  • Rising senior Gabby Ratte (Kula, Hawaii/Seabury Hall/Colby-Sawyer) - Galway, Ireland (spring) - recorded 79 kills, 134 assists, 89 digs and 15 blocks as part of multi-setter system
