Purple Knights to Support Elementary School Children on International Walk to School Day

COLCHESTER, Vt. - As part of the 22nd annual International Walk to School Day, Saint Michael's College student-athletes will be on hand to greet students at Malletts Bay School in Colchester on Wednesday at 8 a.m. as they arrive for the day, helping support the student wellness that the event promotes. The Purple Knights will partake in the event at Malletts Bay School for the eighth consecutive fall.

Nearly 60 student-athletes - including members of the men's and women's basketball, men's cross country, field hockey, men's lacrosse, women's soccer, softball, men's and women's swimming & diving, and women's tennis teams - will be on hand to cheer on the children, some of whom will take their regular walking routes to school, and others who will meet in designated locations near Malletts Bay School and walk in groups with administrators.

Last year at Malletts Bay School, the Purple Knights were involved in one of more than 5,100 International Walk to School Day events around the United States, as the program dates back two decades and is celebrated in more than 40 countries. In 2018, almost 5,000 events are scheduled, including nearly 30 in Vermont.

It all began in 1997, when the Partnership for a Walkable America sponsored the first National Walk Our Children to School Day in Chicago, modeled after the United Kingdom's lead. For more information, visit the official website of International Walk to School in the USA at walkbiketoschool.org.
