COLCHESTER, Vt.- On the week, the women's basketball and ice hockey teams were the only two clubs to collect wins. At the same time, the men's basketball team lost their seventh straight-coming off a six-game road trip-while the men's ice hockey team fell to .500 after a weekend road trip to Connecticut and Massachusetts. The ski teams kicked off their 2008 season at the Bates Carnival while both swimming and diving teams dropped their first 2008-decision at Bentley.
The women's ice hockey team (3-6-1, ECAC 3-4-1) earned a 3-0 shutout win over Southern Maine on Saturday to snap a six-game losing skid after falling to New England College on Friday, 3-1. Despite being out-shot against the Huskies, 32-20, sophomore Desiree Biron (Bow, N.H./UVM) led the Purple Knights' offense with two early goals, while junior goaltender Melanie Cullen (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Acad.) earned her second shutout of the year with 32 saves. Sophomore assistant captain Alexis Regan (Canton, Mass/Canton) also assisted on two of the Purple Knights' goals in the win. In the loss to New England College, Cullen pushed aside 33 shots as sophomore Erin Bruhn (Binghamton, N.Y./National Sports Academy) netted her first career goal against the Pilgrims.
After three straight wins at Cairns Arena, the men's ice hockey team (5-5-1, 2-0 NE-10) dropped a pair of 6-3 decisions to Connecticut College and Tufts University on the road. Against Connecticut College, senior Matt Hall (Scituate, Mass./Bridgton Academy) netted his sixth goal of the season as freshman goaltender Brendan Rimmer (Newbury, Mass./Pingree School) pushed aside 18 shots in two periods of play in his second appearance of the season. In the loss to the Jumbos of Tufts, Saint Michael's gave up four unanswered goals after knotting the score at two in the third period. Junior Ryan Mero (Peekskill, N.Y./Avon Acad.) led all Saint Michael's scorers with his team-leading ninth goal of the season and eighth assist. Also versus Tufts, junior goaltender Tyler Bilton (Penticton, B.C.)--the reigning ECAC East 'Goaltender of the Week'--made 40 saves to push his season mark to 4-4-1.
The women's basketball team (9-5, 6-4 NE-10) recovered from a two-game slump with a home win over Saint Anselm 66-54 to kick off their 2008 home schedule. On Thursday, the Purple Knights fell to Assumption on the road, 67-50 after leading 29-26 at halftime. Sophomore Michelle Otey (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) registered her fourth double-double of the year against Saint Anselm with 17 points and 11 rebounds after being held scoreless in the second half versus the Greyhounds. Freshman Logan Pintka (Niskayuna, N.Y./Colonie) scored a team-high 13 points at Assumption before dropping 15 on the Hawks on Saturday. Pintka also averaged six boards and two steals on the week.
Coming off six straight road losses, the men's basketball team (6-8, 4-6 NE-10) continued their free-fall with a 75-71 loss to Saint Anselm at home. The Purple Knights committed 10 second-half turnovers and were out-scored 13-0 in the final 2:33 to drop their 2008 season home-opener. Earlier in the week, the Purple Knights suffered their worst loss of the season to Assumption, 84-60, in Worcester, Massachusetts. Senior co-captain Brian Monahan (Kinderhook, N.Y./Christian Brothers Acad.) averaged 19 points and 14 rebounds on the week while the Purple Knights fell into a four-way tie for 8th place in the Northeast-10. Also for the Purple Knights, sophomore Ryan Rodrigues (Acushnet, Mass./New Bedford) averaged 14 points in two contests, including a game-high 22 points against Saint Anselm on 7-10 shooting from the field and 7-8 from the free throw stripe.
To open their 2008 season, the men's and women's ski teams skied to a 10th-place finish at the three-day Bates College Winter Carnival to kick off the Eastern Intercollegiate Skiing Association (EISA) season. Leading the women's team was junior Liz Kutch (Honesbale, Pa.), who finished 27th in the slalom (1:53.75) and 40th in the Giant Slalom in 2:24.31.
