COLCHESTER, Vt. - As the women's lacrosse team rolled to their second and third straight wins, the men's team cruised past Franklin Pierce before running into the formidable Bulldogs of Bryant. The tennis teams were also halted by soon-to-be Division-I Bryant University on Saturday, as the women narrowly avoided a sweep and the men fell in straight matches to the perennial power house. The baseball and softball teams faced schedule alterations due to inclement weather and returned home with equally unfavorable results after a pair of conference double-headers.
Women's Lacrosse (4-1, 2-0 NE-10)
Sitting among the top three in the Northast-10 Conference at week's end, the women's lacrosse team opened their home schedule in stride with a convincing 18-3 win over Assumption College on Thursday. Junior attacker Kim Berlo (Scituate, Mass./Scituate), one of six Purple Knights with at least three points, led Saint Michael's with four goals and three assists on the afternoon. Senior Brynne Curran (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) also tallied four goals to help Saint Michael's jump out to a 12-0 halftime cushion.
On Saturday, Curran and the Purple Knights continued their dominance, motoring to a 13-3 halftime lead before drubbing the winless Yellow Jackets, 24-6. Curran tallied nine points, including seven goals, one shy of her career mark in both categories. Senior attacker Lila McCormack (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) capped off the week with 10 assists, including six in the win over American International.
Men's Lacrosse (3-3, 2-1 NE-10)
The men's lacrosse team played the first two legs of their three-game home stand this week with a sound 15-1 triumph over Franklin Pierce and fierce fight to the end against No. 7 nationally-ranked Bryant, falling 8-5. Against the Ravens, senior Greg Lazarus (Evanston, Ill./Evanston) led all scorers with four goals, all of which came in a 9-1 first half. Classmate Jeff Hannon (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug Reg.) allowed one goal for his third win of the year, before making way for sophomore Zach Jandl (Brookline, N.H./Vermont Acad.) to make six saves in the second half.
On Saturday, facing Bryant for the last time in a regular season setting as a Division-II opponent, the Purple Knights jumped out to a 3-2 lead in the second quarter thanks to a pair of goals from sophomore Charlie Niznansky (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield-Ludlowe). In a physical battle to the final horn, the difference proved to be a 4-0 third period in favor of the Bulldogs. Despite firing three more shots on goal than Bryant, Saint Michael's failed to convert on all eight extra-man opportunities. Hannon kept the Purple Knights within striking distance, making 12 saves on the afternoon.
The Saint Michael's College baseball team suffered its eighth and ninth straight losses on Saturday, falling at Assumption College, 14-2 and 13-7. In game one, the Purple Knights got on the board when junior Ryan Reather (Riverton, Utah/Juan Diego Catholic) doubled in a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning. In game two, Saint Michael's rallied from a five-run deficit to tie the game at 7-all in the sixth inning, but the host Greyhounds pulled away for the sweep. Sophomore Matt Beaulieu (Littleton, Mass./Lawrence Acad.) led the Saint Michael's charge, going 3-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in.
Softball (6-5, 0-2 NE-10)
Sharing a similar misfortune with the baseball team, the softball team was forced to play their weekend double-header on the road at Bentley College on Sunday afternoon. The pair of losses (6-3, 11-6) marked the fourth and fifth straight for the Purple Knights after starting the year with a perfect 6-0 record. In game one, junior ace Megan O'Connor (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) pitched a complete game, not allowing an earned run and striking out one. O'Connor also went 2-for-4 in the box with a run scored. In the night-cap, sophomore Lindsay Bernard (Scarborough, Maine/Catherine McAuley) recorded a pair of hits with a run scored to help Saint Michael's build an early 2-1 lead in the second inning.
Tennis (Men: 5-5, 4-1 NE-10; Women: 7-4, 4-1 NE-10)
After matches with Stonehill were rescheduled (to April 20) due to unplayable conditions, both men's and women's tennis ran into the tennis juggernaut Bryant, falling 9-0 and 8-1 respectively. The women, playing at the University of Vermont indoor courts, contended throughout, with sophomore Lindsay Horne (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) and freshman Deahna Giguere (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) picking up a No. 1 doubles victory, 8-4. Giguere also battled for three sets in the No. 2 singles position, eventually falling 7-5, 4-6, 7-5. Dropping their fifth straight match, the men ended their four-game conference win streak to the undefeated Bulldogs (5-0 NE-10) on the Tarrant Recreation Center courts on Sunday.
