Eight Days, 35 Games: Six SMC Spring Sports To Head South For Week-Long Break Beginning Saturday

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College spring sports season begins in earnest for six Purple Knight squads over the next week, as baseball, softball, men's and women's lacrosse, and men's and women's tennis head South during the College's annual spring break. All told, the six squads are scheduled to play a combined 35 contests during the week-long break.

The baseball team is slated to play 10 games at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Fort Myers, Fla., beginning with Sunday's 4 p.m. doubleheader versus Hillsdale (Mich.) College. Led by third-year head coach Seth Cole '01, the Purple Knights are coming off of a 16-24 season last year, falling one victory shy of matching the single-season program record.

The softball team is also scheduled to play 10 games at FAST Spring Ball in Ocoee and Winter Park, Fla., beginning with Saturday's 1 p.m. twinbill versus Grove City (Pa.) College. Led by eighth-year head coach Robyn Newton, the Purple Knights are coming off of a 26-14 campaign in 2007, setting a program record for wins in one season.

The men's lacrosse squad, which opened its season on March 2 with an 11-10 loss to the New York Institute of Technology, plays three contests, starting with Saturday's 4 p.m. game against Northeast-10 Conference Saint Anselm College at Southern New Hampshire University. Led by fifth-year head coach Paul Schimoler, the Purple Knights went 9-7 last spring, advancing to the NE-10 Semifinals.

The women's lacrosse team will play three games at Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla., beginning with Sunday's 12:30 p.m. non-conference contest against league-rival Southern Connecticut State University. Led by eighth-year head coach Carla Hesler, Saint Michael's went 7-8 last season, earning a berth in the NE-10 Quarterfinals.

The men's and women's tennis squads fly to Hilton Head, S.C., to play a combined nine matches beginning on Sunday. The men's team, led by third-year head coach Kevin Lizzo '02, went 5-0 in the fall portion of it schedule, including 4-0 in NE-10 play. The women's squad, led by fifth-year head coach Greg Cluff, also was a perfect 5-0 in the fall, and 4-0 in conference action.
