This Week In Saint Michael's College Athletics


COLCHESTER, Vt. - With all of the spring sport teams down south for spring break, the spring sports season is officially underway. On Saturday, the men's lacrosse team suffered an 18-1 loss to nationally ranked C.W. Post. Yesterday, the baseball team opened their season with a 12-11 victory, while the softball team dropped a pair to Dominican College. The men's and women's tennis teams both dropped their first matches of the week. Women's lacrosse will look to even their record with a contest between Rollins College tonight.

The baseball team (1-0) defeated Minnesota-Crookston, 12-11, in the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Florida. Head Coach Paul Morgan collected his first collegiate victory with the win. Junior Anthony Bonvechio (Newport, Vt./Southern New Hampshire University) went 2-for-5, drove in four runs, including a two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth. Classmate Matt Beaulieu (Littleton, Mass./Lawrence Academy) went 4-for-5 and scored three runs, including the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth. Beaulieu also struck out the side in the ninth to earn the save. Freshman Austin Ziskie (Chevy Chase, Md./Bethesda Chevy Chase) struck out four in an inning and a third for the win.

The men's lacrosse team (1-1) suffered an 18-1 setback to nationally-ranked C.W. Post, Saturday in Orlando, Florida. Junior James Baghai (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) opened the scoring 11 seconds into the game for the Purple Knights. Junior Zach Jandl (Brookline, N.H./Vermont Academy) stopped 10 shots in net.

The men's tennis team dropped a 7-2 decision to Hobart College, Sunday afternoon in Hilton Head, South Carolina. For Saint Michael's, senior John Lescure (Kennebunk, Maine/Berwick Academy) collected wins in his No. 1 singles (6-1, 6-3) and No. 1 doubles matches (9-8, 8-6). Classmate Sean Steigerwald (North Andover, Mass./North Andover) joined Lescure in the No. 1 doubles win for the Purple Knights.

Women's tennis fell to Shepherd University, 6-3, Sunday evening in Hilton Head, South Carolina. For Saint Michael's, sophomore Marran Ranks (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) picked up wins in her No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles matches. Freshman Eileen Mullowney (Burlington, Vt./Burlington) joined Ranks with the No. 2 doubles victory, while the team of junior Catherine Dalton (South Easton, Mass./Oliver Ames) and freshman Emily Ogilvy (Bedford, N.H./Trinity) won their No. 3 doubles match.

The softball team (0-2) dropped a pair to Dominican College (N.Y.), Sunday afternoon in Clermont, Florida. The Purple Knights fell 9-0 in five innings in the first game, and lost 10-8 in the nightcap of the doubleheader.
