  • NE-10 Names 176 SMC Student-Athletes To Commissioner's Honor Roll

    COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Northeast-10 Conference released its Commissioner's Honor Roll for the spring 2011 semester on Wednesday, and 176 Saint Michael's College student-athletes were recognized for their academic achievements. All 17 of Saint Michael's varsity sport programs that compete in the NE-10 had multiple honorees, and nine student-athletes earned a perfect 4.0 grade point average in the spring 2011 semester.

    COLCHESTER, Vt. - A pair of Saint Michael's College student-athletes - Marybeth Ash '11 (Westborough, Mass./Westborough), at left, and rising senior Kevin Hunt (Johnstown, N.Y./Johnstown) - were named to the Northeast-10 Spring Academic All-Conference teams, it was announced on Tuesday. The teams are chosen by a vote of a committee of athletic administrators and Faculty Athletic Representatives, with student-athletes achieving a 3.30 cumulative grade point average or higher.

    COLCHESTER, Vt. – Natalie Elvidge ’11 (Newton, N.J./Newton), a stellar four-year field hockey scholar-athlete at Saint Michael’s College, has been named the College’s sports information intern for the 2011-12 school year, it was announced today. Elvidge will serve as the College’s seventh sports information intern since the position was created in the summer of 2005. Elvidge will assist with all public and media relations facets for the College’s 21 NCAA Division II intercollegiate varsity sports programs.

    COLCHESTER, Vt. – Saint Michael’s College field hockey standout Natalie Elvidge (Newton, N.J./Newton), pictured at left, and men’s ice hockey great Tully LaBelle-Hamer (Fairbanks, Alaska/Alaska Avalanche (NAHL)) received the Roger F. Keleher ’15 Memorial Award on Friday, it was announced at the College’s Senior Awards Luncheon earlier that day. The Keleher Award is presented annually to the outstanding male and female scholar-athletes in the College’s graduating class.

The College is inviting candidates to apply for its Sports Information Internship position, as well as a newly-created Athletics Marketing/Administration Internship made available through the 2010-11 Institutional Minority Enhancement Internship Grant.
  • ECAC Honors 19 From SMC On Hockey All-Academic Team

    COLCHESTER, Vt. - Nineteen Saint Michael's College ice hockey student-athletes - 10 men and nine women - were named to the ECAC East All-Academic Team, it was announced on Friday afternoon. To be named to the all-academic team, the student-athlete must have completed at least one academic year, have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale, and have competed in at least one-half of his team’s contests during the current season (a goaltender must have played at least 33 percent of his team’s minutes).

    COLCHESTER, Vt. – The Purple Knights put the finishing touches on another chapter of Saint Michael’s College athletics last week, as nationally-ranked men’s lacrosse was narrowly eliminated from the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament by Adelphi in the Semifinals. Saint Michael's also held its 64th annual Block 'M" Awards Banquet, and saw 20 student-athletes earned regional academic recognition.

    COLCHESTER, Vt. – Nationally-ranked men’s lacrosse led the charge into the postseason with two wins last week as the Purple Knights edge closer toward the end of another year of Saint Michael’s College athletics. The 10th-ranked Purple Knights capped its 2011 regular season campaign with a four-game winning streak, posting wins over Bentley and Assumption to secure an 8-2 record in Northeast-10 Conference play and the third seed in the NE-10 Tournament.

The women’s tennis team advanced to their 12th-straight conference semifinal match, and will find out Tuesday if they qualified for their fourth-straight NCAA Tournament, while the baseball and women’s lacrosse squads lost to nationally-ranked opponents.

The three senior scholar-athletes are: field hockey’s Natalie Elvidge (Newton, N.J./Newton), baseball’s Pete Estes (Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union), and men’s soccer’s Rondel Ward (Saint George, Barbados/Harrison’s College HS). Saint Michael’s annual ceremony will take place on Friday at 4:30 p.m. at the College’s McCarthy Arts Center recital hall.

    COLCHESTER, Vt. – The Purple Knights played a combined 31 games over Spring Break, with several teams heading South to warmer climates. Baseball earned a dramatic win over arguably the toughest opponent of the 2011 season, and women’s lacrosse picked up its first victory under first-year head coach Ashley Hughes. Baseball completed the program’s best stint in Florida with a 4-7 record, highlighted by a 2-1 win over Palm Beach Atlantic University on Friday night. Sophomore pitcher Andrew Kelley (Lincoln, N.H./Lin-Wood) tossed 7.1 innings and struck out 11 against the Sailfish.

    COLCHESTER, Vt. – Saint Michael’s women’s basketball defied the odds and men’s basketball nearly knocked off another regional superpower as the hoop squads continued to push toward the postseason last week. Women’s basketball, originally predicted to finish 15th in the conference according to the Northeast-10 Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, finished a 2-1 week by clinching a playoff spot with the squad’s first win over Stonehill since 2002.

    COLCHESTER, Vt. – The Purple Knights men’s hockey team clinched its first Northeast-10 regular season title since 2007-08 and men’s basketball upset region- and league-leading Bentley on Saturday for an exciting week in Saint Michael’s athletics. Men’s basketball upset of league-leading Bentley on the road on Saturday, giving Saint Michael’s its second straight season with a win over the Falcons and the team’s first win at Bentley since Dec. 2, 2000 – the year the Purple Knights went 27-4 and reached the Sweet 16. Junior Tyler Schilling (Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka) powered the Purple Knights with back-to-back double-doubles while averaging 14 points and 12 rebounds and shooting 55 percent from the field.
