COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College Department of Athletics will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) this Saturday, Feb. 18, and also honor the 40th anniversary of the passing of Title IX, during the Purple Knights' women's basketball contest against Saint Anselm College at 1:30 p.m.
All girls and women will be admitted for free into the game, as the College takes part in the 26th annual NGWSD, an event that began in 1987 as a day to remember late Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman for her athletic achievements and her work to assure equality for women's sports. Since that time, NGWSD has evolved into a day to acknowledge the past and recognize current sports achievements, the positive influence of sports participation, and the continuing struggle for equality and access for women in sports.
As part of the event, videos and a slideshow will document the history of female student-athletes at Saint Michael's, and College staff, faculty and students have provided personal athletic items from their playing careers that will be displayed. Also being recognized is the anniversary of the implementation of Title IX, a regulation passed in 1972 that paved the way for gender equity in sports.
