COLCHESTER, Vt. - A youthful core returns to the Saint Michael's College baseball team this spring, with sophomores and first-years continuing to make a major impact for the second consecutive season.

Five starters and a sixth who platooned at his position return this season ... returners accounted for 44 of the Purple Knights' 70 extra-base hits in 2018 ... pitchers who combined to start 19 of their team's 41 contests are back ... Saint Michael's suffered 17 losses by four runs or less last spring, including five combined against NCAA Tournament qualifiers Franklin Pierce University and Southern New Hampshire University. Three came versus the Penmen, who advanced to the NCAA Division II Championship in Cary, N.C. ... Saint Michael's set a school record for pitching strikeouts while placing second in program history in stolen bases and tying for third in doubles ... 16 of the 18 rostered players are in either their first or second year of college baseball, with seven of them rookies.

The Purple Knights begin a seven-game Spring Break trip to Fort Myers, Fla., on Sunday, kicking off what is slated to be a 14-game road swing to begin the season prior to their initial home game ... among their opponents in Florida is Johns Hopkins (Md.) University, the ninth-ranked team in the latest D3baseball.com national poll, on March 21 ... Saint Michael's visits American International College for its NE10 opener on March 24 ... with a contest against Castleton University on April 4, the Purple and Gold begins its home slate, with the first of 10 straight games on Doc Jacobs Field ... six consecutive road games, five more at home, and a three-game series at Bentley University cap the regular season ... the top four teams in the NE10's two divisions head into the league championship beginning on May 7.
