Deschaine nets second-overtime winner, Saint Michael's downs Franklin Pierce, 1-0

RINDGE, N.H. - Saint Michael's College field hockey junior Jenna Deschaine (Claremont, N.H./Stevens) scored in the 90th minute on Tuesday to lift the Purple Knights to a 1-0, double-overtime victory against Franklin Pierce University during Northeast-10 Conference play at Sodexo Field. Saint Michael's improved to 3-6 overall and 1-3 in the league while heading to extra sessions for the third time in four contests. The Ravens are 2-6 and 0-4.

Deschaine's second goal of the season was set up by sophomore back Maddy Dobecki (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough), as the Purple Knights won a double-overtime contest for the first time since Oct. 21, 2006, having claimed 10 contests in one overtime and two others in penalty strokes since then.

Senior Abigail Bowie (Readfield, Maine/Kents Hill School) made 11 saves for her fifth career shutout and has allowed just one goal in the last 180:05. Classmate Abby Dusha (Greenwich, N.Y./Greenwich Central School) and sophomore Claire Kondrotas (Barre, Mass./Quabbin Regional) each picked up a defensive save, with Kondrotas' her second this season and Dusha's the first of her career. Saint Michael's is 7-1 in its last eight contests with Franklin Pierce.

Junior Meaghan Williams had nine saves for the hosts, who held a 20-15 edge in shots, while senior Shannon O'Leary made a defensive stop. The Purple Knights nearly doubled Franklin Pierce in penalty corners, 11-6.

Bowie stopped a Raven shot in the 87th minute before Dusha notched her defensive save 36 seconds later, and first-year Jessica Greeley sent a follow-up attempt wide. In the 89th minute, Deschaine ran off the first of two straight penalty corners, with the second resulting in the winner. After sending in the initial pass, Deschaine redirected Dobecki's drive from the top of the circle around Williams and inside the left post.

Bowie made 10 of her saves in regulation, when Franklin Pierce held a 14-7 advantage in shots. Saint Michael's had a couple early opportunities, with junior Jackie Matthews (Auburn, Mass./Auburn) being stopped by Williams on consecutive attempts in the 10th minute and senior Carolyn Avery's (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) shot cleared out by O'Leary in the 14th. The final four shots of the half were all sent on Bowie, who registered saves on each.

Kondrotas concluded a Raven corner sequence with her defensive save in the 42nd minute, and Bowie made three saves in a four-second span during the 56th minute. In the final 10 minutes of regulation, Saint Michael's rattled off three straight corners beginning in the 62nd minute but fired no shots, and Bowie stopped Greeley in the 65th minute before the Purple Knights ran a shotless corner with 39 seconds left, only to see the Ravens counter with a shot that was blocked with one second left.

After taking seven shots in the opening 70 minutes, Saint Michael's fired off six shots alone in 15 minutes of the first seven-on-seven overtime, as Avery was stopped on a 77th-minute breakaway before having back-to-back shots saved in the 83rd minute. Dobecki's shot during a corner set with three seconds to go sailed just wide of the left post. Bowie notched one save in the stanza while also rushing out to challenge senior Andrea Fahey into sending the ball wide of the right post in the opening minute. Classmate Kenady Kelly narrowly missed outside the left post in the 82nd minute, and the squads remained scoreless.

The Purple Knights host their next three games, beginning by taking on Bentley University on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
