COLCHESTER, Vt. - Saint Michael's College field hockey senior Monica Miles (Dover-Foxcroft, Maine/Foxcroft Academy) and junior Jenna Deschaine (Claremont, N.H./Stevens) were among 86 student-athletes across seven sports selected for a Northeast-10 Conference Academic All-Conference honor for the fall semester. The tandem was part of an 18-woman corps of field hockey players in the league that earned the accolade.
Saint Michael's players have now been selected 26 times in the past 13 years, and it was the academic all-conference debut for both Deschaine and Miles. Deschaine was also named NE10 All-Conference in the fall and becomes just the fourth Purple Knight to land all-conference and academic all-conference in the same school year, with sister Megan Deschaine '16 also pulling the feat as a junior and senior.
Deschaine was integral at both ends of the field, starting 16 games in a defensive capacity but also totaling two goals and two assists while serving as the team's primary penalty corner inbounder. After recording a goal and a defensive save versus Southern New Hampshire University on Sept. 14, the assistant captain scored the game's lone goal in a 1-0 double-overtime win at Franklin Pierce University on Sept. 27. In the 81st minute versus American International College on Oct. 26, Deschaine assisted the winner during a 2-1 overtime triumph. She has also landed a spot on the NE10 Commissioner's Honor Roll five times and earned a selection to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) National Academic Squad twice.
Miles saw time in all 18 games on defense, making 15 starts while recording three defensive saves. In her defensive role, she helped the Purple Knights allow one goal or less eight times and yield 6.6 corners per game. The captain totaled two of her stops in an overtime setback against Bentley University on Oct. 1 before picking up another during the AIC victory. After appearing in only five games as an underclassman, with each coming in her sophomore season, she played in all 36 contests the last two years, starting 33. She has been a seven-time NE10 Commissioner's Honor Roll qualifier while landing on the NFHCA National Academic Squad on three occasions.
The NE10 Academic All-Conference teams are chosen by a vote of a committee of athletic administrators and Faculty Athletic Representatives (FAR). To be eligible for selection to the Academic All-Conference teams, a student-athlete must have met and/or exceeded the following minimum requirements: 1) participated in at least half of the team's competitions and be either a starter or significant contributor; 2) achieved a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average; and 3) completed at least one academic year at their current institution.
