SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Two goals 6:15 apart in the second half lifted the Saint Michael's College field hockey team past American International College, 2-0, on Tuesday at Abdow Field during Northeast-10 Conference play. The Purple Knights are 5-7 overall and 2-5 in the league, while the Yellow Jackets slipped to 2-11 and 1-6.
Senior Jackie Matthews (Auburn, Mass./Auburn) and junior Morgan Johnston (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport) both scored for the Purple and Gold, while sophomore Anna Hurley (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) made one save to register her fourth shutout. First-year Maddie Green (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport) notched an assist as Saint Michael's extended its winning streak in the series to six after captured the last five contests by one goal apiece. Redshirt senior Alexis Torosian made three stops for the hosts.
A scoreless first half saw each time fire only three shots, with both keepers making one save. In the seventh minute, American International sophomore Jenny Holmquist lined up an attempt that Hurley denied, and classmate Georgia Barnes' follow-up bid was blocked. Less than a minute later, Green was turned away by Torosian. During the 33rd minute, the Yellow Jackets ran off the only penalty corner for either team in the stanza, but senior Payton Montague's shot from the top of the circle was blocked by senior back Jenna Deschaine (Claremont, N.H./Stevens) before junior defender Claire Kondrotas (Barre, Mass./Quabbin Regional) redirected the ball out of bounds.
With the hosts down a woman following a green card in the 44th minute, Matthews staked the Purple Knights to a lead at 44:34. After junior Katie Leonard (Carmel, N.Y./The Ursuline School) sent a slow shot that Torosian turned away, Green stood on the doorstep and poked a pass over to Matthews, who slid a shot inside the left post.
Saint Michael's nearly made it 2-0 in the 50th minute, as junior Maddy Dobecki (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) made a nice move to gain the circle before passing to Johnston, who spun to create space but slipped a shot wide right from the middle of the circle. Johnston found the back of the net soon thereafter, however, stealing the ball from a Yellow Jacket in the circle then bouncing a shot through the keeper at 50:49.
During a 68th-minute corner set, Holmquist slipped a shot just wide of the left post with her team still trailing by two goals. The Yellow Jackets' final opportunity, also on a corner sequence, ended with Dobecki blocking sophomore Chelsea Davis' bid in the middle of the circle at 69:21.
Four of the Purple Knights' next five games are at home, as they take on Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday at 12 p.m.
