Previously the head coach at the University of Vermont for 16 seasons, Nicki Houghton returns for her fourth season as an assistant coach with the Saint Michael's field hockey program in 2017.

The Purple Knights posted their highest overall and Northeast-10 Conference win totals in six years during the fall of 2014, with a 9-9 season that included a 5-6 league record. On the strength of knocking off 10th-ranked Merrimack College, a 2013 NCAA Tournament Final Four qualifier, and No. 9 Saint Anselm College during consecutive early October outings, Saint Michael's was nationally ranked for four weeks, climbing as high as the ninth position. The Purple Knights were 8-10 in 2015, which included a 2-1 overtime upset of No. 7 Assumption College. Saint Michael's posted a 6-12 mark in 2016, playing a school-record seven overtime contests, with five of those games ending in setbacks.

The longest-tenured head coach in the history of UVM field hockey, Houghton compiled 85 victories in 16 years while leading her teams to four America East Conference Tournaments. Her 2007 squad tied a program mark with 12 wins after the 2006 team was the highest-scoring in school annals.
