MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - The Saint Michael's College men's golf team played two full rounds on Wednesday during the Bentley University Newport National Classic at the Newport National Golf Club, finishing ninth among 10 schools with 649 strokes. Babson College won with 590 shots.
With his team amid a run of playing six rounds in 11 days, junior Tucker Buteau (Gorham, Maine/Tilton School) neared two personal bests. His opening-round five-over 77 was one stroke off of his career low, and he carded a 79 on the back 18 to finish with 156 shots on Wednesday, tying for 23rd and falling two strokes off of a personal best.
Sophomore Matt Johnson (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) also needed only 77 shots in the opening round before tying for 28th at 157, and junior Mike Bryne (Pembroke, Mass./Boston College HS) made his season debut by first turning in a career-low 81 during the first round before finishing with a career-best 166 for the tournament, tying for 48th. Sophomore Jack Maino (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich) had the two lowest rounds of his career, ending the day 87-83--170.
The Purple Knights complete their season this weekend on Saturday and Sunday during Southern New Hampshire University's Penmen Spring Invitational at Derryfield Country Club in Manchester, N.H.
