RINDGE, N.H. - The Saint Michael's College men's lacrosse team fell to Franklin Pierce University, 11-7, on Wednesday during Northeast-10 Conference play at Sodexo Field. The Purple Knights are 1-8 overall and 0-8 in the league, while the Ravens improved to 4-7 and 2-7. The Purple and Gold lost by five goals or fewer for the fifth time this season, and yielded 12 goals or less for the fourth straight game, averaging 10.3 in that time.
First-year Ralph Grillone III (Brockton, Mass./Cardinal Spellman) led the visitors with two goals and two assists, while junior Bobby Frank (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) had two goals, five ground balls and a caused turnover from the midfield. Senior Tom Fitzgerald (Cranford, N.J./Cranford), junior Brian Loughlin (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) and first-year Anthony Sullivan (Westfield, Mass./Westfield) also scored.
Junior Matt Hanley (Plainview, N.Y./Bethpage) notched nine saves and three ground balls, while classmate Neil Gallagher (Sudbury, Mass./Green Mountain Valley School) and first-year Will Moriarty (Ashland, Mass./Catholic Memorial) both caused two turnovers. In the process, Gallagher tied Tyler Violette '12 for seventh in program history with 36 for his career. Junior Johnny Karanasios (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Guertin) notched two ground balls and caused a turnover, while first-year Alec Sharlow (Watertown, N.Y./South Jefferson) was 3-for-5 on faceoffs.
Junior Sean Delea led Franklin Pierce with a hat trick, while classmate Benjamin Lassow and sophomore Luke Tracy both found the back of the net twice. Junior Connor Wacksman made 15 stops.
Delea's goal with 7:18 left in the opening quarter was the lone scoring until Sullivan and Frank tallied 26 seconds apart, with Frank's go-ahead marker at 1:59 coming off of sophomore Hunter Goodwin's (Milton, Vt./Milton) feed. Tracy's marker with 46 seconds to go kicked off a 3-0 run over a 2:18 span, and the hosts led 4-2. Fitzgerald and Grillone both scored in the middle of the period to knot the contest and, after junior Jack Carney put the Ravens back up at 4:03, Frank converted Grillone's feed with eight ticks left, sending the teams into halftime tied.
Junior Louis Palumbo won the opening draw of the second half before being fed for a go-ahead goal at 14:42 of the third period, beginning a 6-1 run that put the hosts in control. Grillone's goal at 41 seconds of the stanza brought Saint Michael's within 8-6, but Lassow scored twice in a 2:12 span of the fourth en route to Franklin Pierce leading 11-6. Loughlin tallied off of Grillone's pass with 1:05 left for the final goal.
The Purple Knights host American International College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
