COLCHESTER, Vt. - Junior Cole McIntire (Eliot, Maine/Marshwood) scored 2:19 into the second overtime to push the Saint Michael's College men's soccer team past Queens (N.Y.) College, 3-2, on Friday during non-conference play at Duffy Field. Saint Michael's starts the season off 1-0 with the Knights falling to 0-1, extending the Purple Knights' all-time record to 4-1 against Queens.
McIntire, sophomore Jake Bannon (Clifton, Va./Paul VI Catholic), and first-year Matteo Bianchini (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) collected a goal apiece for the Purple Knights while their goalkeeper, sophomore Gabriel Pineda (Miami, Fla./Immaculata-La Salle), collected six saves. Bannon and Bianchini scored their first collegiate goals. Senior Dorie James and sophomore Emgi Gousse recorded the two goals for Queens, while junior Robert Retnauer had three stops in net, taking the loss.
A 2-2 standstill pushed the squads to overtime. The first 10 minutes saw scoring opportunities as the teams combined for three shots, but neither team was successful, including as Pineda dove to stop a hard shot from junior Bruno Sampaio from the top of the box in the 94th minute. At the 2:19 mark of the second overtime, McIntire lifted the Purple Knights to victory, hitting a line drive from 25 yards out to the upper left corner of the net.
During the opening half, Gousse broke the deadlock in the 18th minute, receiving a cross from the left side and slipping it past the Saint Michael's goalkeeper. After receiving a cross early in the second stanza, Bannon found the end line to his right and a defender in front, but deked his way around the Knight, driving toward the goal and beating the keeper on the next touch to tie the game at 1-1 at 59:01.
Less than 15 minutes later, senior Matt Vlasich (East Kingston, N.H./Exeter/Saint Anselm) and junior Richard Baccei (Shelburne, Vt./Champlain Valley Union/American International) worked together to set up Bianchini for the go-ahead goal at 71:13. Vlasich tracked down a ball at the end line and crossed into the box for Baccei, who sent a short pass for Bianchini. From the right side of the box, the first-year lofted a shot over the Queens keeper to put Saint Michael's back ahead 2-1. Queens found their second goal of the game at 84:55 when sophomore Cristian Villalta crossed to James, who one-touched the pass out of the air and into the right side of the net. The visitors drilled two more shots at Pineda within the final four minutes of regulation, but he saved both, pushing the game to overtime.
The Purple Knights travel to Saint Anselm College next Saturday for a 1 p.m. kick-off. The Northeast-10 Conference counterparts will be playing a non-conference game.
