WORCESTER, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College men's soccer team suffered its second straight 2-1 loss on Saturday, falling against Assumption College in the Greyhounds' Multi-Sport Stadium. The Purple Knights are 1-4-1 overall and winless through four Northeast-10 Conference games, while Assumption is 4-4 and 2-2.
Sophomore Andres Rivas (Caracas, Venezuela/Palmer Trinity School) scored for the Purple and Gold, as 15 of its last 18 meetings with the Greyhounds since 2003 have now been decided by one goal or less. First-year Leland Gazo (Colchester, Vt./Rice Memorial/Bradley) made six stops. Saint Michael's held an 18-15 edge in shots.
Sophomore Jason Lages and first-year Mauro Cortez both scored once for Assumption, and sophomore Brian Murray made nine saves. The hosts held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Purple Knights posted a 9-4 advantage in shots during the first half, when Assumption had the best early chances, running off two corner kick sets in the initial 6:44 but getting no shots away. Senior Adrián Díaz (Santiago de Compostela, Spain/Vermont Academy) sent an 11th-minute corner kick cross to the head of sophomore Justin D'Orlando (Middleton, Mass./Bridgton Academy), who rung the post, but Rivas broke through soon thereafter, beating a defender and slipping his shot into the left corner at 13:57.
Gazo turned away Lages late in the 15th minute before a follow-up bid by the Greyhounds was cleared out of danger for a team save by sophomore back Brady Channell (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh). Murray turned away Purple Knight bids in the 23rd and 24th minutes before Rivas had chances stopped in the 33rd and 37th minutes. Sophomore Cris Cervantes (Barranquilla, Colombia/Doral Academy Charter School) saw one final shot saved in the 41st minute.
Gazo denied Lages at 46:39 to begin the game-tying sequence. A follow-up try by senior Connor Henry was wide of the target, and Lages took a shot off of an ensuing corner kick, with the bid being blocked, but he sent another shot home at 47:34 for the equalizer. Murray made stops in the 58th and 59th minutes to keep the game level, and Gazo picked up saves of his own at 59:46 and 71:15. Off of another corner sequence in the 78th minute, Lages had an initial shot stopped by Gazo, but Cortez pounced on the rebound and netted the go-ahead marker at 77:17.
The Purple Knights came up with the next two opportunities, but Channell and sophomore Jacob von Giebel (Lambertville, N.J./South Hunterdon Regional) had tying attempts stopped in the 83rd and 86th minutes, respectively. Rivas sent his own tying bid wide of the net with 1:39 remaining on the final shot for either team.
