Purple Knight skiing teams combine for opening-day 9th-place showing, Farrell 11th

HANCOCK, Vt./RIPTON, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College Alpine and Nordic skiing teams stand ninth out of 16 institutions following Friday's opening day of the two-day Middlebury College Carnival. With 158 points, the Purple Knights trail Saint Lawrence University by only 32 points while leading Harvard University by 33. The meet's Alpine races are taking place at the Middlebury Snow Bowl, while Rikert Ski Touring Center is hosting Nordic events. Saturday's action begins with the first run of the women's giant slalom at 9:30 a.m.

Junior Brad Farrell (West Windsor, Vt./Sharon Academy) stood tied for 23rd in the slalom after his first run of the day before moving all the way into 11th overall by the end of his second and final run, clocking in with a cumulative 1:33.03. His second trek of 47.12 was the third best in the event. Classmate Kevin Krone (Copper Mountain, Colo./Summit) was 29th at 1:35.89, while senior Fredrik Sandell (Oslo, Norway/Donski Alpine) narrowly trailed, claiming 30th in 1:35.97. With the three top-30 showings, men's Alpine was fifth among 13 teams.

On the women's side, first-year Meggane Grand (La Plagne, France/Lycée des métiers Ambroise Croizat) was 21st in 1:46.73 to pace the Purple Knights in the slalom. Classmate Ella Dorval Hall (Newbury, Mass./Gould Academy) moved from 45th following her first run into a final placement of 31st, at 1:50.11, thanks to the 27th-best second run of the competition. Junior Mary Joyce (Long Beach, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) nabbed 40th by clocking in at 1:52.86. Women's Alpine skiing scored sixth-place points out of 11 squads.

First-year Emma Barnes (Amherst, Wis./Amherst) claimed a season-best 43rd-place finish during the women's 10K classic race, coming within 13.0 seconds of the top 40 after completing the course in 35:47.5. Junior Elizabeth Cubberley (Acworth, N.H./Fall Mountain Regional) was 52nd in 36:59.2, and senior Chloe Boutelle (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) took 53rd at 37:11.1.

Sophomore Torin La Liberte (Madison, N.H./Kennett) also neared the top 40, coming within 11.2 seconds of that contingent while placing 46th during the men's 10K classic race in 28:50.1. Senior Isaiah St. Pierre (Charlestown, N.H./Fall Mountain Regional) took 62nd in 31:04.7, and sophomore Cody Putnam (Alburgh, Vt./BFA-Saint Albans) rounded out his team's top three at 67th with a time of 33:25.4.
