Skiing teams finish ninth at Middlebury, Sandell ties for sixth

HANCOCK, Vt./RIPTON, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College Alpine and Nordic skiing teams placed ninth for the third straight week when the two-day, 16-team Middlebury College Carnival came to an end on Saturday. With 274 points, the Purple Knights edged Harvard University by 30 while finishing among the top nine three weeks in a row for the first time since a season-opening run of five straight ninth-place showings in 2009. The University of Vermont won with 931 points. Middlebury Snow Bowl hosted Alpine races, and Nordic events occurred at Rikert Ski Touring Center.

Senior Fredrik Sandell (Oslo, Norway/Donski Alpine) highlighted the Purple Knights' day by tying for sixth in the giant slalom, clocking in at 2:09.86 between a pair of runs. It was his second top-10 finish this year, the ninth of his career, and his best placement since taking third during the 2013 University of Vermont Carnival slalom. Junior Brad Farrell (West Windsor, Vt./Sharon Academy) nabbed 17th at 2:11.08.

Junior Mary Joyce (Long Beach, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) was the lone Saint Michael's woman to complete two runs in the giant slalom. After standing 54th following the opening run of the day, Joyce cut 1.02 seconds for her second trek, finishing the event in 45th with a cumulative 2:24.86.

For the first time since the 2012 Middlebury Carnival, a Purple Knight male and female Nordic skier cracked the top 40 at the same meet. Senior Chloe Boutelle (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) took 36th during the 5K freestyle in 18:02.3, claiming the second-best finish of her career and the top showing by a female in the program since her 30th-place performance at the 2012 Middlebury Carnival's mass-start 15K classic. First-year Emma Barnes (Amherst, Wis./Amherst) was 50th at 19:04.2, and junior Elizabeth Cubberley (Acworth, N.H./Fall Mountain Regional) placed 55th in 19:29.4.

Sophomore Torin La Liberte (Madison, N.H./Kennett) was 39th in the men's 10K freestyle at 27:53.4, coming within 3.4 seconds of 34th in a close field. Senior Isaiah St. Pierre (Charlestown, N.H./Fall Mountain Regional) nabbed 59th in 30:54.3, and classmate Sam Hammond (Oakdale, Minn./North) was 62nd in 32:05.1.

The Purple Knights resume action on Feb. 27-28 for the Saint Lawrence University Carnival, which is also the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) Championship and the NCAA East Regional Championship.
