Skiing squads nearing ninth place at Saint Lawrence Carnival, duo cracks top 20

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College Alpine and Nordic skiing teams stood 10th out of 15 teams after day one of the season-ending Saint Lawrence University Carnival on Friday, with their 132 points just eight fewer than those of ninth-place Harvard University. The meet is also the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) Championship and the NCAA East Regional Championship. The carnival, which wraps up on Saturday, has Alpine events at Whiteface Mountain and Nordic races occurring at Mount Van Hoevenberg.

Senior Fredrik Sandell (Oslo, Norway/Donski Alpine) and junior Brad Farrell (West Windsor, Vt./Sharon Academy) both cracked the top 20 in the giant slalom, with Sandell 18th thanks to a two-run time of 2:10.88 and Farrell 19th in 2:11.14. Farrell cut 4.36 seconds off of his opening-run time, while Sandell trimmed 4.02 ticks. Sophomore Ben Lambert (Milford, N.H./Milford) turned in his best college showing, taking 47th at 2:19.18.

On the women's side, first-year Ella Dorval Hall (Newbury, Mass./Gould Academy) cut 6.14 seconds between runs to place 29th in 2:18.86. Classmate Meggane Grand (La Plagne, France/Lycée des métiers Ambroise Croizat) took 33rd at 2:20.00, and first-year Molly Van Deursen (North Conway, N.H./Kennett) was 45th in 2:24.88.

Senior Chloe Boutelle (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) had the top finish for a Purple Knight Nordic skier on Friday, taking 43rd during the 5K freestyle in 18:26.5. First-year Emma Barnes (Amherst, Wis./Amherst) was 52nd at 19:21.4, and junior Elizabeth Cubberley (Acworth, N.H./Fall Mountain Regional) crossed the finish line in 19:39.7 to claim 57th.

Sophomore Torin La Liberte (Madison, N.H./Kennett) placed 44th in the 10K freestyle at 31:29.2 to lead the men. Seniors Isaiah St. Pierre (Charlestown, N.H./Fall Mountain Regional) and Sam Hammond (Oakdale, Minn./North) were 61st and 62nd, respectively, in 34:53.2 and 35:33.6.
