Nordic skiing opens season with time trial in Quebec against Laval

STONEHAM-ET-TEWKESBURY, Quebec - The Saint Michael's College Nordic skiing team opened its 2015-16 season with an unscored time trial against Laval University on Sunday at Forȇt Montmorency. The event came during the Purple Knights' November training camp in Quebec, and just a handful of days after their first foray this year onto snow, which is absent from their home training facility at Sleepy Hollow Inn, Ski & Bike Center in Huntington.

Among the nine men competing on the 9.2K course, junior Torin La Liberte (Madison, N.H./Kennett) was the first Purple and Gold skier to finish, taking third in 25:38. First-year Aaron Deeter (Truckee, Calif./Tahoe Truckee) was 19 seconds behind, in fourth, while classmate Liam Schmelzle (Saint Louis Park, Minn./Saint Louis Park) notched a fifth-place showing in a time of 26:29. First-year Matt Doyle (Salisbury, N.H./Merrimack Valley) was eighth at 27:29, and senior Samuel Fogg (Rutland, Vt./Rutland) took ninth in 30:27.

Sophomore Emma Barnes (Amherst, Wis./Amherst) topped the Purple Knight women in fourth out of nine entrants, crossing the finish line in 31:39. First-year Amy Duclos (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) was sixth in 33:50, while senior Brianna McKinley (Moultonborough, N.H./Moultonborough Academy) finished six seconds back while occupying seventh. Junior Hallie Bergwall (Lebanon, N.H./Lebanon) notched a ninth-place showing at 35:44.

Along with the Alpine squad, the Nordic skiing team heads to the Bates College Carnival on Jan. 15-16.
