Nordic skiing completes competition at three-day Colby Carnival with team sprints

WATERVILLE, Maine - The Saint Michael's College Nordic skiing team completed competition at the three-day Colby College Carnival with team sprint freestyle events on Sunday at Quarry Road Recreation Area, as the Nordic and Alpine squads combined to finish ninth among 16 schools for the weekend. By scoring 350 points, the Purple Knights were within 32 of eighth-place Saint Lawrence University. The Alpine races occurred on Friday and Saturday.

The men's team's top tandem of junior Torin La Liberte (Madison, N.H./Kennett) and first-year Liam Schmelzle (Saint Louis Park, Minn./Saint Louis Park) placed 26th with a combined time of 18:45.3, while first-years Aaron Deeter (Truckee, Calif./Tahoe Truckee) and Matt Doyle (Salisbury, N.H./Merrimack Valley) took 31st at 19:01.9. Senior Samuel Fogg (Rutland, Vt./Rutland) and junior Cody Putnam (Alburgh, Vt./BFA-Saint Albans) placed 40th.

In the women's race, sophomore Emma Barnes (Amherst, Wis./Amherst) and first-year Amy Duclos (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) nabbed 29th in 23:30.7. The next two duos were separated by only 42 seconds, as senior Elizabeth Cubberley (Acworth, N.H./Fall Mountain Regional) and junior Hallie Bergwall (Lebanon, N.H./Lebanon) took 40th while senior Brianna McKinley (Moultonborough, N.H./Moultonborough Academy) and first-year Ellen Emers (East Hardwick, Vt./Hazen Union) sided for a 41st-place performance.

The Alpine skiing squad returns to action next Friday and Saturday at the University of Vermont Carnival. The Nordic events will be contested when the UVM Carnival concludes on Feb. 6-7.
