Guillaume Grand earns second career podium finish, skiing eighth at Saint Lawrence

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. - Sophomore Guillaume Grand (La Plagne, France/Lycée Général Ferrié) landed the second podium finish of his career, placing second in the slalom on Saturday, as the Saint Michael's College Alpine and Nordic skiing teams combined to take eighth among 17 schools when the season-opening Saint Lawrence University Carnival concluded.

The Purple Knights tallied 329 points to edge out the hosts by two points, while Dartmouth College won with 965. The men's Alpine team alone placed third out of 12 squads on Saturday with 105 points, trailing only Dartmouth (118) and the University of Vermont (124). Alpine events occurred at Whiteface Mountain and the Nordic races were at Mount Van Hoevenberg.

Grand led a men's trio that placed among the top 12, matching a feat the team turned at the season-opening slalom event a year ago. Grand clocked in at 1:30.12 between his two runs, trailing the top finisher from Dartmouth by 0.30 seconds and placing in the top 10 for the 15th time in 16 career starts. Grand's other podium performance was also a runner-up finish in the first slalom event of a season, coming last Jan. 16 at Bates College. Junior Mathias Grimsrud (Stabekk, Norway/Donski Alpine) took a career-best 10th at 1:31.25, turning in the fastest second-run time of the event (45.37). First-year Zach Bouchard (Merrimac, Mass./Gould Academy) was 12th in 1:31.67 during his first completed collegiate race.

On the women's side, five Purple Knights were among the top 40, with junior Meggane Grand (La Plagne, France/Lycée des métiers Ambroise Croizat) taking 15th at 1:44.38. First-year Anna Willassen (Jar, Norway/Persbråten VGS) placed 27th with a time of 1:47.54, finishing just 0.16 seconds outside the top 25, while junior Ella Dorval Hall (Newburyport, Mass./Gould Academy) took 31st at 1:47.95, leaving her 0.13 ticks short of the top 30 and NCAA points. First-year Megan Ahearn (Ringwood, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) was 33rd in 1:48.44, and senior Nicole Cordingley (Litchfield, N.H./Campbell) placed 36th in 1:48.91.

Senior Torin La Liberte (Madison, N.H./Kennett) led the men's Nordic squad during the 10K freestyle, placing 81st in 33:17.0. Sophomore Aaron Deeter (Truckee, Calif./Tahoe Truckee) took 88th at 33:31.9, and classmate Liam Schmelzle (Saint Louis Park, Minn./Saint Louis Park) was 96th in 34:17.5.

In the women's 5K freestyle, junior Emma Barnes (Amherst, Wis./Amherst) took 91st in 18:42.8, followed closely by sophomore Amy Duclos (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) in 92nd with a time of 18:48.8. Senior Julia Snyder (Fairfax, Vt./BFA-Fairfax) crossed the finish line in 19:15.3 to place 97th.

Both Purple Knight squads head to the University of New Hampshire Carnival next weekend. Day one action kicks off on Friday at 9:30 a.m.
