Guillaume Grand seventh in GS, skiing squads eighth after day one at EISA Championship

NEWRY, Maine/RUMFORD, Maine - The Saint Michael's College Alpine and Nordic skiing teams combined to stand in eighth place among 18 schools after the opening day of the two-day, regular-season-ending Bates College Carnival on Friday, with 176 points between them. The meet, which is also the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association (EISA) Championship and the NCAA East Regional Championship, is seeing its Alpine races contested at Sunday River and the Nordic events occur at Black Mountain. Day two begins on Saturday at 9:15 a.m.

The men's Alpine squad placed fourth in the giant slalom with 75 points, trailing only Dartmouth College (138), the University of Vermont (109) and Middlebury College (103). Between both genders, the Alpine program took sixth (136), narrowly following Colby College (140) and the University of New Hampshire (143). Due to inclement weather conditions on a warm day, the second run for both the men's and women's GS was canceled.

Sophomore Guillaume Grand (La Plagne, France/Lycée Général Ferrié) placed seventh in a time of 1:14.28, his eighth top-10 showing in 11 starts this year. First-year Colby Jordan (Charlotte, Vt./Mount Mansfield Winter Academy) captured 24th at 1:17:81, and classmate Zach Bouchard (Merrimac, Mass./Gould Academy) was 26th in 1:18.13. Sophomore Danny Duffy (Warren, Vt./Green Mountain Valley School) took 37th at 1:20.83.

On the women's side, junior Meggane Grand (La Plagne, France/Lycée des métiers Ambroise Croizat) was 22nd at 1:16.20, leaving her just 0.25 seconds outside the top 20. First-year Anna Willassen (Jar, Norway/Persbråten VGS) was 24th in 1:16.55, and first-year Emilia Laffin (Chamonix, France/Lycée du Mont-Blanc René Dayve) occupied 29th by crossing the finish line in 1:17.44. Senior Nicole Cordingley (Litchfield, N.H./Campbell) narrowly trailed in 32nd at 1:17.82, while classmate Abigail Hotaling (Fabius, N.Y./Fabius-Pompey) made her season debut in 66th place.

Sophomore Liam Schmelzle (Saint Louis Park, Minn./Saint Louis Park) claimed 45th during the 10K classic Nordic race, clocking in at 32:48.2. Senior Torin La Liberte (Madison, N.H./Kennett) was 55th in 33:50.4, and sophomore Aaron Deeter (Truckee, Calif./Tahoe Truckee) rounded out his team's scorers at 66th in 37:21.9.

Junior Emma Barnes (Amherst, Wis./Amherst) finished the women's 5K classic by placing 53rd in 19:53.0, while senior Catie Corrigan (Canajoharie, N.Y./Canajoharie Central School) was 59th in 20:48.6. Sophomore Amy Duclos (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) took 61st at 21:06.6.
