Skiing Teams Seventh After Day One at UVM Carnival, Alpine Squad Takes Fourth in GS

STOWE, Vt./CRAFTSBURY, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College Alpine and Nordic skiing teams are seventh among 15 teams following the opening day of the University of Vermont Carnival, as the Alpine squad scored fourth-place points on Friday. Its events are being held at Stowe Mountain Resort, while the Nordic portion of the carnival is at Craftsbury Outdoor Center. Day two begins on Saturday at 9 a.m., as the Purple Knights have 204 points and trail Williams College for sixth place by only 27.

The Purple and Gold women's Alpine skiers scored 84 points to claim fourth place in the giant slalom, just one point short of third-place University of New Hampshire. Sophomore Anna Willassen (Jar, Norway/Persbråten VGS) claimed eighth place with a two-run time of 2:13.15, and senior Meggane Grand (La Plagne, France/Lycée des métiers Ambroise Croizat) was 14th at 2:14.57. Sophomore Erin Spence (Aspen, Colo./Aspen) took a career-high 17th place at 2:15.52, and classmate Kara Gailiunas (Warren, Vt./Green Mountain Valley School) placed 33rd at 2:23.24 during her first college race, coming within three spots of earning NCAA Championship points.

Junior Guillaume Grand (La Plagne, France/Lycée Général Ferrié) paced the men in seventh during the GS at 2:05.40, clocking in the fourth-fastest second run (1:02.85). Senior Mathias Grimsrud (Stabekk, Norway/Donski Alpine) was 19th in 2:08.19, and sophomore Zach Bouchard (Merrimac, Mass./Gould Academy) took 23rd in 2:10.03. Junior Torjus Grimsrud (Stabekk, Norway/Donski Alpine) captured 31st at 2:13.18, and classmate Tristan McInnis (Holladay, Utah/Rowland Hall) was one spot behind, trailing Torjus Grimsrud by 0.26 seconds.

During the women's mass-start 15K freestyle, senior Emma Barnes (Amherst, Wis./Amherst) tied for 44th by crossing the finish line in 52:19, while first-year Ale Legate (Anchorage, Alaska/West Anchorage) took 54th at 53:52. Junior Aimee Sala (Carrabassett Valley, Maine/Kents Hill School) placed 70th in 1:00:22. On the men's side, sophomore Mitch McDonald (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) was 66th in the mass-start 20K freestyle at 1:01:24.1, while classmate Kevin Jeter (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) and first-year Sam Seeley (Center Harbor, N.H./Inter-Lakes) were 68th and 76th, respectively.
