LYME, N.H./HANOVER, N.H. - Three Saint Michael's College women's Alpine skiers were among the top 20 in the giant slalom on Friday during day one of the Dartmouth College Carnival. Between Alpine and Nordic events, the Purple Knights are eighth out of 17 schools with 171 points, just five short of Bates College.
The carnival continues tomorrow beginning at 9 a.m. Alpine events are being held at Dartmouth Skiway, while Oak Hill Cross Country Center is host of the Nordic races for the annual carnival for the first time since 2011 after inclement conditions forced races to move elsewhere each of the past six years.
The Alpine program scored fifth-place points on Friday to trail fourth-place University of New Hampshire by 20. The women were fifth in the GS, scoring 80 points to come within six of fourth-place New Hampshire. Sophomore Anna Willassen (Jar, Norway/Persbråten VGS) paced the team by placing 11th in a two-run combined time of 2:08.54, coming within 0.08 seconds of the top 10. Classmate Emilia Laffin (Chamonix, France/Lycée du Mont-Blanc René Dayve) was 16th at 2:09.71, and senior Meggane Grand (La Plagne, France/Lycée des métiers Ambroise Croizat) nabbed 20th in 2:10.31.
All six women completed both runs on Friday, with sophomore Megan Ahearn (Ringwood, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) the fourth Purple Knight finisher, taking 31st at 2:21.50 to fall 0.18 seconds behind the 30th-place racer, the last to earn NCAA Championship points. Junior Clara Lopez Costa (Barcelona, Spain/Green Mountain Valley School) was 33rd in 2:21.99, and first-year Julianne Grimsrud (Stabekk, Norway/Donski Alpine) placed a career-best 40th at 2:14.36 during her second collegiate race.
Junior Guillaume Grand (La Plagne, France./Lycée Général Ferrié) was the top Purple and Gold male during the GS, capturing 14th in 2:03.45. Senior Mathias Grimsrud (Stabekk, Norway/Donski Alpine) was 21st in 2:04.66, and sophomore Zach Bouchard (Merrimac, Mass./Gould Academy) tied for 29th in 2:05.86. Senior Danny Duffy (Warren, Vt./Green Mountain Valley School) claimed 33rd with a time of 2:06.12.
Senior Emma Barnes (Amherst, Wis./Amherst) registered her second top-40 time of the season on the Nordic side, taking 34th during the 5K classic in 39:15.40, finishing just 14.9 seconds short of the final competitor who notched points toward the NCAA Championship. First-year Ale Legate (Anchorage, Alaska/West Anchorage) was 57th in 41:29.60, and sophomore Aimee Sala (Carrabassett Valley, Maine/Kents Hill School) took 69th in 45:08.40.
Sophomore Kevin Jeter (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) led the men during the 10K classic by placing 68th in 35:33.0, while classmate Mitch McDonald (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) was 72rd in 36:06.8. First-year Alex Warner (East Montpelier, Vt./U-32) nabbed 78th at 38:27.8.
