COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's swimming & diving team held off Merrimack College, 129-94, on Friday in the Ross Sports Center natatorium. The Purple Knights began a season 2-0 for the first time since 2013-14 in their final home meet until Jan. 14, while the Warriors began their year. Saint Michael's in 3-0 in the all-time series.
Sophomore Patty Kohn (Weston, Conn./Greenwich) paced the Purple and Gold with three event victories, claiming the 200- (2:02.63) and 500-yard (5:32.30) freestyle races while leading off for the top 200-yard medley relay quartet, which clocked in at 1:58.05. She joined juniors Ally Fischang (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) and Theresa Murphy (Pittsfield, Mass./Pittsfield) and first-year Lauren Giampietro (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) on the foursome.
Giampietro also claimed the 100-yard breaststroke race in 1:13.58, while Murphy topped the 100-yard butterfly field in 1:05.24. First-year Sarah White (Lakeville, Mass./Apponequet Regional) was third, just 0.04 seconds short of second. Junior Genevieve Gigandet (Groveland, Mass./Central Catholic) won both one-meter diving events, with 187.10 and 130.10 points, and senior Lindsay McNall (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) captured the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.35) and 200-yard individual medley (2:21.55) races to push her career total to 81 victories.
Senior Katrina Wiesner (Bow, N.H./Bow) had a hand in three runner-up showings, during the 50 free, 100 free and 200 free relay. In the 50 free, her time of 26.88 was 0.33 seconds short of the winner, and Fischang took third in 26.94. Wiesner joined McNall, White and sophomore Tess Grimaldi (Higganum, Conn./Haddam-Killingworth) on the quartet, while first-year Sarah Brennan (Glen Rock, N.J./Immaculate Heart Academy) was second in the 1,000 free.
Both the Purple Knights' men's and women's squads visit Clarkson University tomorrow for a 1 p.m. meet.
