Swimming & diving squads both fall to Saint Rose during home finale

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's and women's swimming & diving teams concluded a two-meet home weekend with their final competition in the Ross Sports Center pool this winter, both falling to The College of Saint Rose on Sunday. The Purple Knight women are 5-2 after a 137-97 loss to the 5-6 Golden Knights, while the men slip to 2-4 following a 135-65 setback against 6-5 Saint Rose.

During the final home meet of her career, senior Lindsay McNall (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) played a hand in three of the Purple Knights' five wins, upping her career total to 98 triumphs between individual and relay events. She topped the 100-yard butterfly field in 1:00.20 during her lone solo race, with classmate Katrina Wiesner (Bow, N.H./Bow) taking second. In the 400-yard medley relay, McNall led off with a 100-yard backstroke time of 58.93, the fastest among Northeast-10 Conference swimmers this winter. She, Wiesner, sophomore Patty Kohn (Weston, Conn./Greenwich) and first-year Lauren Giampietro (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) combined for a 4:16.38 showing en route to victory.

McNall anchored the top 400-yard freestyle relay (3:54.88), joining junior Ally Fischang (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee), sophomore Tess Grimaldi (Higganum, Conn./Haddam-Killingworth) and first-year Reiley Adelson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs).

Kohn was victorious in the 200 free (2:05.33) while placing second during the 100 back, and Wiesner claimed the 50 free race (26.81) by 0.13 seconds. Grimaldi took third. Fischang was the 100 free runner-up, and Giampietro finished second during the 400-yard individual medley and the 100-yard breaststroke, where senior Cymantha Rogers (Swampscott, Mass./Swampscott) took third. Junior Genevieve Gigandet (Groveland, Mass./Central Catholic) placed second in both one-meter diving competitions, and Adelson was third during both the 500 free and 1,000 free.

First-year Connor Hopkins (Windham, N.H./Windham) won the 50 free during the men's competition, clocking in at 22.77 to claim victory by 0.21 seconds. Sophomore Seamus Butler (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) was fourth, coming within 0.02 seconds of third place while trimming the fifth-place finisher by 0.02 ticks. The duo swam for the runner-up 400 medley relay, joining junior Spencer Ralston (Hebron, Conn./Cushing Academy) and sophomore Pat Thornton (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence).

Hopkins was also second in the 100 back by 0.19 seconds. Thornton earned second-place showings in the 500 and 1,000 free races, Ralston was the 200 free runner-up, and Butler claimed third during the 100 breast. Ralston, seniors Stephen Andersen (Concord, N.H./Concord) and Ryan Butler (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) and first-year Aidan Mulderrig (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) sided for second place in the 400 free relay.

Ryan Butler was third in the 200 free and fourth during the 100 free, and Mulderrig finished third during the 100 fly and 400 IM. Junior Jake Fox (Cranston, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) placed third in the 500 free and fourth in the 1,000 free, sophomore Jacob Sutton (Tyngsboro, Mass./Tyngsboro) was fourth during the 500 free, and Andersen was fourth during the 100 fly.

The Purple Knights close the regular season next Sunday at Saint Lawrence University at 1 p.m. With a victory, the Saint Michael's women would secure six dual-meet triumphs in three consecutive seasons for the first time since a five-year run between 1992-93 and 1996-97. The men aim for their highest win total since 2009-10.
