NEW LONDON, N.H. - The Saint Michael's College men's and women's swimming & diving teams swept Colby-Sawyer College on Saturday at Knight Natatorium, returning to action for the first time in two weeks. The 3-1 Purple Knight women downed the 3-4 Chargers, 130-109, to extend their series winning streak to 13 decisions, while the 2-1 Saint Michael's men earned a 116-53 victory over the 0-5 Chargers. The Purple and Gold men won their 11th straight against Colby-Sawyer while matching their highest win total since the 2009-10 season.
Purple Knights won every men's swimming event, including as two student-athletes claimed pool records. Senior Spencer Ralston (Hebron, Conn./Cushing Academy) and sophomore Connor Hopkins (Windham, N.H./Windham) both won four events, while Ralston set the pool record in the 1,650-yard freestyle (17;40.65) and Hopkins in the 100-yard backstroke (56.24). Ralston also claimed the 500 free (5:18.72) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.41) by just 0.28 seconds in addition to leading off for the top 400 free relay quartet (3:41.19).
Hopkins also captured the 50 free (22.46) and 200 back (2:06.85) while leading off for the winning 200-yard medley relay foursome (1:44.37). He joined junior Seamus Butler (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) and first-years Dan Fortier (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) and Payton Stewart (Keene, N.H./Keene) in that event, while Ralston sided with juniors Jacob Sutton (Tyngsboro, Mass./Tyngsboro) and Pat Thornton (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) and sophomore Aidan Mulderrig (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) in the 400 free relay.
Thornton won the 200 free (1:52.52) and 100-yard butterfly (55.57), and Mulderrig took the 200 fly (2:11.11) and 400-yard individual medley (4:51.42). Butler was victorious in the 200 breast (2:37.47), and Stewart touched the wall first during the 100 free (52.47).
Senior Theresa Murphy (Pittsfield, Mass./Pittsfield), junior Patty Kohn (Weston, Conn./Greenwich) and sophomore Lauren Giampietro (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) all won three events for the women. Giampietro took the 100 (1:13.12) and 200 breast (2:38.91) races while joining Murphy, senior Sammy Sidorakis (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) and first-year Kristin Burlew (Springfield, Vt./Hartford) on the top 200 medley relay (2:00.67).
Murphy topped the 100 (1:04.10) and 200 (2:30.31) fly fields, and Kohn claimed the 200 back (2:22.57) and 1,650 free (19:12.43). Kohn sided with Burlew, junior Tess Grimaldi (Higganum, Conn./Haddam-Killingworth) and sophomore Sarah White (Lakeville, Mass./Apponequet Regional) on the winning 400 free relay foursome (3:59.64).
Grimaldi also won the 50 free (26.90), White took the 100 free (58.94), and senior Genevieve Gigandet (Groveland, Mass./Central Catholic) topped the one-meter (163.05) and three-meter (80.80) diving events. First-year Meg Geschwind (Rochester, Minn./Mayo) won the 400-yard individual medley (4:59.72).
Both Purple Knight squads host their next meets. The women take on Franklin Pierce University and Merrimack College next Friday at 5 p.m. before the men and women both oppose Clarkson University the next day at 1 p.m.
