Swimming & Diving Squads Claim 11 Wins in Season-Opening Losses to Keene State

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's and women's swimming & diving teams combined to win 11 events while opening their 2018-19 seasons with losses against Keene State College on Saturday in the Ross Sports Center. The men fell by a 158-130 count, while the women suffered a 184-103 setback.

THE ACTION

  • In his college debut, Imbergamo won each of his three solo races and was part of a winning relay, topping the 200-yard backstroke (2:06.83), 500-yard freestyle (5:21.09) and 1,000 free (10:53.15). In the 200 free relay (1:32.70), he sided with Butler, Hopkins and Stewart.
  • Stewart won a career-high three times, matching his rookie year total with two individual victories, in the 100 free (51.71) and 200 free (1:55.71). He took second in the 50 free to the victorious Hopkins (22.43).
  • Hopkins was second in the 100 back (55.72), losing by just 0.16 seconds. He joined junior Aidan Mulderrig (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side), sophomore Dan Fortier (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) and first-year Sean McGurn (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) to take second in the 400-yard medley relay.
  • McGurn was runner-up in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke races, while Mulderrig took second in the 200-yard butterfly and 200-yard individual medley.
  • Seniors Jacob Sutton (Tyngsboro, Mass./Tyngsboro) and Pat Thornton (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) and first-years Myron Prograis (Etters, Pa./Cedar Cliff) and William Sullivan (Arlington, Va./Bishop O'Connell) placed second in the 200 free relay.
  • Senior Tim Kinville (Colchester, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) was 2.45 points outside second place during the first one-meter diving event, and Butler was 0.17 seconds out of second in the 100 free.

THE ACTION

  • Kohn won the 500 (5:29.40) and 1,000 (11:16.68) free races while joining Giampietro, Grimaldi and White for the fastest 400 medley relay (4:19.09). The quartet also sided for second place in the 200 free relay.
  • Giampietro topped the 200 breast (2:38.45) and was second in the 100 breast. White was the 200 free runner-up.
  • Sophomore Leah Benoit (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) placed second in the 100 back and was 0.63 seconds short of senior Meg Flanagan (Middletown, R.I./The Prout School/Boston College) for second in the 200 back.
  • Sophomore Meg Geschwind (Rochester, Minn./Mayo) was second in the 200 IM.
  • During the 50 free, Grimaldi and senior Elizabeth Doherty (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) trailed the second-place finisher by 0.09 and 0.35 seconds, respectively.
