Swimming & Diving Squads Return to Action with Setbacks to Bentley

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's and women's swimming & diving teams returned to action for the first time since Nov. 17 by suffering dual-meet losses to Bentley University on Thursday at the Ross Sports Center. The men dropped a 203-90 decision, while the women suffered a 223-50 setback.

  • Following a training trip to Puerto Rico, the Purple Knights were back in action for the first time since Nov. 17. Saint Michael's had last competed at home on Nov. 9.
  • Beginning of a stretch of five dual meets in 11 days to complete the regular season.

THE ACTION

  • Hopkins won the 50-yard backstroke (25.40) and 50-yard freestyle (22.17) while anchoring a come-from-behind victory in the 200 free relay (1:32.78), joining McGurn, Stewart and Sullivan. Hopkins was also second in the 100 free.
  • McGurn placed second in the 200-yard breaststroke, and Stewart nabbed second during the 50-yard butterfly, besting sophomore Dan Fortier (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) by one spot.
  • First-year Nate Imbergamo (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) was second during the 1,000 free and third in the 50 back and 200 back. He also led off for the third-place 200-yard medley relay foursome, siding with Stewart and seniors Seamus Butler (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) and Pat Thornton (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence). The quartet was within 0.63 seconds of the runner-up position.
  • Thornton captured second in the 200 fly and third during the 500 free, Sullivan claimed third in the 50 free, and Butler was fourth in the 50 breast, just 0.19 seconds outside of third.
  • Senior Tim Kinville (Colchester, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) placed third in both one-meter diving competitions.

  • Grimaldi took second in the 50 free, coming within 0.32 seconds of the winner, while anchoring the runner-up 200 free and 200 medley relays. She was also third in the 50 fly.
  • Kohn and seniors Elizabeth Doherty (Dedham, Mass./Dedham) and Meg Flanagan (Middletown, R.I./The Prout School/Boston College) completed the 200 free relay foursome, while Geschwind, Kohn and junior Sarah White (Lakeville, Mass./Apponequet Regional) finished the 200 medley relay team.
  • Geschwind placed second during the 50 breast and was third in the 200 breast, and Kohn took third during the 500 free and 1,000 free.
  • First-year Maggie King (Clinton, Conn./Mercy) took the runner-up spot in the second one-meter diving event.
  • Doherty was third in the 100 free, Flanagan took third in the 200 back, and White garnered a third-place showing in the 50 back.

  • Saturday vs. the State University of New York at Potsdam, 1 p.m.
  • The dual meet will serve as Senior Day.
