COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's and women's swimming & diving teams swept the State University of New York at Potsdam on Saturday at the Ross Sports Center, both securing victories late in their Senior Day contests. The men won by a 123.5-113.5 count, while the women were victorious 119-102.

THE ACTION

  • The Purple Knights led 112.5-107.5 heading into the final event, the 200-yard freestyle relay, needing to win that race to capture the meet. Sullivan overcame a 0.11-second deficit upon entering the water for the third leg before handing sophomore Payton Stewart (Keene, N.H./Keene) a 0.61-second lead for the anchor leg, which he extended into a 0.88-tick victory in a time of 1:32.97. Mulderrig and Butler swam the first two legs, respectively.
  • Sullivan also won the 50 free (23.57), while Stewart was second, both 0.05 seconds behind Sullivan and ahead of the third-place finisher. Sullivan joined Hopkins, Thornton and first-year Sean McGurn (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) to win the 200-yard medley relay (1:42.39).
  • Hopkins took the 100 free race (49.57), with Stewart second, while placing second during the 200 free. McGurn was third in that competition.
  • Imbergamo won the 100-yard backstroke (59.12) and 1,000 free (10:58.76) while taking third in the 200-yard individual medley. Mulderrig won the 200 IM (2:09.74) and was third during the 100-yard butterfly, trailing Thornton by one spot. Thornton was second in the 500 free.
  • Kinville captured the second of two one-meter diving events (162.50) while placing third in the other, McGurn was the 100-yard breaststroke runner-up, and first-year Myron Prograis (Etters, Pa./Cedar Cliff) tied for third in the 100 back.

THE ACTION

  • The Purple Knights led 96-91 heading into the 100 breast, the second-to-last event, but clinched the team victory thanks to Giampietro winning (1:18.85) and sophomore Meg Geschwind (Rochester, Minn./Mayo) taking third place. That gave the hosts a 10-point cushion prior to the 200 free relay finale, which Doherty, Grimaldi, Kohn and White wrapped up with a triumph (1:47.21).
  • Kohn's two solo wins came in the 500 free (5:32.26) and 1,000 free (11:26.60), as Geschwind was second in the former while junior Megan Reid (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) placed third in the latter.
  • Flanagan, Giampietro, Grimaldi and White won the 200 medley relay (1:59.21). Giampietro later won the 200 IM (2:22.35), Grimaldi captured the 50 free (26.67) by 0.07 seconds, and White took the 100 fly (1:03.51).
  • Geschwind won the 200 free (2:09.17), while Doherty placed second in the 100 free. She was also 0.05 seconds outside the top three in the 50 free.
  • First-year Maggie King (Clinton, Conn./Mercy) nabbed second during the second one-meter diving event, while sophomore Leah Benoit (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) was second in the 200 IM and was 0.20 seconds outside the top three in the 100 back.
  • Flanagan claimed third in the 100 back, trailing the runner-up by 0.04 ticks, while Reid captured third during the 100 free.
