Men's Swimming & Diving Ends Drought Against Norwich, Women Extend Win Streak

NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's swimming & diving team downed Norwich University for the first time in nine years while the women extended their winning streak over the Cadets in the Purple Knights' sweep on Thursday at Goodyear Pool. The men picked up a 161-124 win, and the women captured a 148-114 decision.

  • The Purple Knights defeated Norwich for the first time since Jan. 26, 2010 (184-109), and for the first time in Northfield since Nov. 18, 2009 (154-134).
  • This was the first of two dual meets in 24 hours for Saint Michael's, and the third of four in nine days.
  • The Purple and Gold's 11 event victories accounted for its second-highest total this season.

THE ACTION

  • Hopkins won the 50- (25.29) and 100-yard (55.05) backstroke races, led off for the top 200-yard medley relay (1:42.89), and anchored the winning 200-yard freestyle relay (1:31.75), which was victorious by 0.23 seconds. Butler joined him on both foursomes while taking second in the 50-yard breaststroke.
  • Stewart anchored the 200 medley relay while taking the 50 free (23.00) and 50-yard butterfly (24.87) races. First-year William Sullivan (Arlington, Va./Bishop O'Connell) was second in the 50 free, while sophomore Dan Fortier (Sandwich, Mass./Sandwich) took second during the 50 fly. Sullivan was also on the winning 200 free relay.
  • Imbergamo won the 500 free (5:08.34) and 1,000 free (10:39.77), with first-year Sean McGurn (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) the runner-up in the latter. McGurn won the 100 breast (1:03.48).
  • Junior Aidan Mulderrig (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) swam a leg for the winning 200 free relay while also claiming second in the 100 fly and 200-yard individual medley.
  • Kinville claimed both one-meter diving competitions, with 111.10 then 167.40 points, and senior Pat Thornton (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) rounded out the top 200 medley relay quartet.

  • Saint Michael's won 11 swimming events, matching its season high, while coming within one victory of its overall high for the season.

THE ACTION

  • Grimaldi, Kohn and White all swam for the winning 200 free relay (1:49.08) and 200 medley relay (1:58.10). Kohn took the 100 back (1:02.96) and 1,000 free (11:34.38), while White captured the 50 back (29.66) and 50 fly (28.57) races. Grimaldi topped the 50 free (26.68) and was second in the 50 fly.
  • Giampietro rounded out the 200 medley relay quartet while also besting the 50 breast (33.50) field by 0.14 seconds and the 100 breast (1:12.51). She was the 200 IM runner-up.
  • Doherty led off for the top 200 free relay foursome, won the 200 free (2:20.36) and was second in the 100 free.
  • Sophomore Meg Geschwind (Rochester, Minn./Mayo) won the 100 fly (1:09.96), and junior Megan Reid (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) claimed second during the 500 free.
  • The two sided with senior Meg Flanagan (Middletown, R.I./The Prout School/Boston College) and sophomore Leah Benoit (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) to take third in the 200 free relay, coming within 0.76 seconds of second place.
