SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey team concluded its first-semester slate with a 10-1 win against Daniel Webster College during non-conference play at Cairns Arena Saturday afternoon. The Purple Knights improve to 3-6-1 on the season, while the Eagles drop to 0-10. The teams played the finale of a two-game weekend series.
Saint Michael's, which recorded double digits in goals for the fourth time in program history, received points from 14 players, including eight goal scorers. The Purple Knights also posted 14 assists. During the game, senior Amanda Kempainen (Chazy, N.Y./Chazy Flyers U19) and junior Erin Dwyer (Weymouth, Mass./Archbishop Williams) both improved their career goal totals to 17, moving into a tie for 10th in school annals.
Dwyer paced the squad with two goals and one assist, junior classmate Carolyn Avery (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) chipped in two goals. Junior Athena Akiki (Allendale, N.J./New Jersey Rockets) recorded one goal and two assists, while Kempainen and senior Kaly Spilhaus (Bourne, Mass./Groton School) both had one goal and one assist. Juniors Tori Dinger (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) and Lauren Sullivan (Wakefield, Mass./Middlesex Islanders) tallied one goal apiece, while senior Emily Loebs (Acton, Mass./Minuteman Lady Flames) and junior Kayla Kee (Newton, Mass./Newton South) provided three and two helpers, respectively. The goals by Dinger, Spilhaus and Sullivan were the first of their respective careers. Junior Erica Ragazzo (Mansfield, Mass./Ursuline Academy) made nine saves to earn her first career win as part of her third career start.
Daniel Webster first-year Kerrigan Toth (Littlestown, Pa./Hershey Junior Bears) scored and was 11-of-14 on faceoffs, while classmate Jennifer Johnson (Gillette, Wyo./Team Wyoming) won 19 draws. Sophomore Michelle Davis (McKinney, Texas/Culver Academy) turned in 24 saves in the opening 27:09 before first-year Ariana Kresic (Edmonton, Alberta/Edmonton Thunder) collected 21 saves in 32:51 of relief.
The Purple and Gold clicked off three goals on 17 shots in the first period. Kempainen got the hosts going at 4:30 when she collected her own rebound off the post and punched in the second-chance bid for the power-play marker. Saint Michael's then scored twice in a 2:12 span, beginning at 5:47, as Sullivan's slapshot from the point trickled into the left post before Dwyer corralled the puck and tapped in the score to the open left side thanks to a bounce off the end boards. Toth netted Daniel Webster's only goal as she roofed a shot from the lower right circle with 43 seconds left in the period.
Saint Michael's scored four times in a 4:31 span as part of 22 shots in the second stanza. Following a Davis save on first-year Brenna Galvin's (Dorchester, Mass./Boston Latin School), Johnson fired a shot on Ragazzo from the top of the right circle at 3:10. Avery scored at 5:07 and Spilhaus netted her first career goal at 6:15. Donahoe found the back of the net at 7:09 and Dinger registered her first career tally at 9:38 to give the hosts a 7-1 lead through two periods.
Just 33 seconds into the third period, Johnson was stuffed by Ragazzo on a shot from the top of the crease. Eagle first-year Madison Wood (Suwanee, Ga./Boston Junior Blades) had her right circle blast sticked away by Ragazzo at 5:10. The Purple Knights rounded out the period with three more goals, thanks to scores by Avery, Akiki and Dwyer.
The Purple Knights continue game action by hosting a non-conference contest against Lake Forest (Ill.) College on Jan. 6 at 7 p.m.
