SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey team opened its 2017-18 campaign with a 4-2 victory over Post University on Friday evening in Cairns Arena. The Purple Knights are 1-0 while the Eagles are 0-1.
Seniors Katherine O'Brien (East Sandwich, Mass./Tilton School) and Kaitlyn Wurzer (Lee, N.H./Berwick Academy), junior Brenna Galvin (Dorchester, Mass./Boston Latin School), and first-year Megan Doherty (Stoughton, Mass./Walpole Express) all scored for the Purple Knights while junior Nicole Talcott (Colchester, Vt./Rice Memorial Prep) tallied 22 saves for her first career win. Wurzer also went 14-for-23 on faceoffs. Doherty, Galvin, and Wurzer all recorded the first goals of their careers.
First-years Ann Margaret Disciscio and Kayleigh Miller scored for the Eagles as sophomore Jenna Baumgartner notched 35 saves.
The Purple Knights capitalized first at 4:41 of the first period as first-year Krista Ferrari (Dunstable, Mass./East Coast Wizards) sent a pass from behind the net out front for Doherty, who hit a one-timer to Baumgartner's five-hole. Exactly a minute later at 5:41, O'Brien extended the lead to 2-0 for the Purple Knights as her initial shot was saved, but a pile of players forced the puck into the net. At 13:36, Post held a two-on-one opportunity as first-year Jordan Hoyda sent the shot wide.
The Eagles scored within seven seconds of the second stanza as Disciscio received a pass from center ice and skated into the left circle before hitting the back of the net on the far side. Galvin extended the Saint Michael's lead to 3-1 at 1:35 during a scramble in front of the net with the goalie sprawled on the ice. Post capitalized during a power-play opportunity as Miller struck to the top left corner, bringing the Eagles within one. However, Wurzer snuck a goal from the slot during a power-play opportunity at 9:09 in the third, slipping it past the goalie's right pad.
The teams complete their season-opening series on Saturday at Cairns Arena at 2:30 p.m.
