SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey team finished its weekend series against the University of New England with a 3-1 loss at Cairns Arena Saturday afternoon. The Purple Knights fell to 2-10 while the Nor'easters improved to 4-2-4.
Sophomore Arianna Boscia (Cranston, R.I./La Salle Academy) notched her first goal of the season for the Purple Knights with first-year Krista Ferrari (Dunstable, Mass./East Coast Wizards) pitching in the assist. Senior Jillian Witwicki (Danvers, Mass./Pingree School) went 10-for-17 at the dot. Senior Amanda Donahoe (Wakefield, Mass./Saint Mary's) and sophomore Torrie Gray (Plymouth, Mass./Plymouth North) had three blocks each while junior Nicole Talcott (Colchester, Vt./Rice Memorial Prep) denied 23 attempts in 56:47 of action.
Senior Annie Mullen tallied two goals for the Nor'easters as first-year Jessica Tolzman added a goal of her own and junior Annie Rademacher turned away 24 shots.
Rademacher denied five Saint Michael's attempts within the first 12:06 of play, which included a point-blank shot from Boscia, before UNE's Mullen capitalized off of the rebound of sophomore Tatum Gietl's initial shot to send one home past Talcott's glove at 12:06. Boscia sent a pass across the ice to first-year Emily Lanci (Canton, Mass./Lawrence Academy) at 14:06, with Lanci hitting to the five-hole as Rademacaher denied the try. Despite a power play at different times from both teams in the final 5:24, neither team was able to capitalize.
Gietl sent an attempt at 6:50 that nicked the outside of the left post before the Purple Knights sailed back-to-back attempts that were saved at 12:42. Sophomore Michaela McLaughlin tried at 13:06 as she brought the puck around from the corner on the left side to have Talcott knock it away. Saint Michael's then went on to hit the next four shots, getting none by Rademacher before UNE later hit three back-to-back tries at 17:36 and then later at 17:59 where Talcott picked up a glove save. The Nor'easters' second goal came with 11.6 seconds left in the second period as Tolzman capitalized on her own rebound to hit a backhand shot to the left side of the net.
The Nor'easters extended their lead at 47 seconds as Mullen's wrist shot hit bar down by the left side at the beginning of the third stanza. Talcott denied a first-year Jessie Scott coast-to-coast bid at 3:43. The first great chance in the third period for Saint Michael's came at 10:04 during a two-on-one opportunity as Witwicki skated down the right side and sent a short pass to first-year Lizzie Blanchard (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) near the left post with Blanchard sending it just left of the bottom corner. After three more Purple Knight attempts, Boscia tallied on the fourth try by hitting a slap shot from the right circle and sailed the puck past Rademacher to the top left with 52 seconds left.
The Purple Knights are off until Friday, Jan. 5 when they host the Trader Duke's Ice Hockey Classic and start the weekend by playing the University of Southern Maine at 7 p.m.
