WORCESTER, Mass. – The Saint Michael's College women's ice hockey team hit the road for a two-game weekend series at Division I College of the Holy Cross, dropping the Friday afternoon opener, 10-0, at Hart Center at the Luth Athletic Complex. The Purple Knights are 3-14 while the Crusaders are now 10-5-2.
Junior Nicole Talcott (Colchester, Vt./Rice Memorial Prep) played 27:59 in net with 26 saves for the Purple Knights. First-year Lucy Chin (Lexington, Mass./East Coast Wizards) had nine saves during 12:01 of relief before classmate Alyssa Cimino (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) finished off the final 20 minutes of the game with five saves. First-year Emily Lanci (Canton, Mass./Lawrence Academy) went 9-for-14 in faceoffs while senior Kaitlyn Wurzer (Lee, N.H./Berwick Academy) was 8-for-17. Senior Jillian Witwicki (Danvers, Mass./Pingree School) blocked four shots.
Senior Emily Lissner and first-year Katie MacCuaig led the Crusaders with three goals each while senior Kara Violette pitched in two tallies. Lissner also went 8-for-12 from the dot. During 40 minutes, first-year Julia Pelletier stopped four shots before sophomore Marcia LaPlante closed out the game with seven saves.
The Crusaders got on the board early in the first period as they tallied two goals within 10 seconds of each other at 1:03 and 1:13 with both tallies coming from Lissner. Around the 11-minute mark, Wurzer's attempt was denied by Pelletier with first-year Krista Ferrari's (Dunstable, Mass./East Coast Wizards) shot being rejected soon after. Junior Julie Matthias notched the third goal at 19:37 for the Crusaders.
MacCuaig recorded her first goal of the game at 3:02 in the second stanza before the Crusaders capitalized on a power-play opportunity at 7:59 to go ahead 5-0. The Crusaders closed out the period with four more goals with two coming from Violette.
MacCuaig finished off the scoring at 2:02 of the third period. The Purple Knights held a 7-6 advantage in shots during the period. Around the 7:30 mark Lanci, junior Brenna Galvin (Dorchester, Mass./Boston Latin School), and first-year Maddie Gervais (Glastonbury, Conn./East Catholic) all had shots turned away by LaPlante.
The Purple Knights finish the weekend at 2:05 p.m. on Saturday at Holy Cross.
