Women's lacrosse suffers second straight 13-9 loss, falls at Assumption

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Saint Michael's College women's lacrosse team suffered its second straight 13-9 loss on Sunday, falling to Assumption College in the Greyhounds' multi-sport stadium. The Purple Knights are 1-5 overall and 0-5 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the hosts moved to 4-3 and 3-2.

Sophomore Ellie Clark (Smithsburg, Md./Mercersburg Academy) scored twice and dished off an assist for Saint Michael's, while senior Paige MacKinnon (Lowell, Mass./Lowell) and first-year Kaelyn Oliver (Canton, Conn./Canton) both provided two goals. MacKinnon added three ground balls, three draw controls and three caused turnovers. Junior Kealy Moyna (Yonkers, N.Y./The Ursuline School) handed out four assists.

Junior Kaitlyn Wurzer (Lee, N.H./Berwick Academy) made a career-high eight saves in her first college start, and her first appearance since April 25, 2015. That was the last time a keeper other than senior Grace Gunning (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) saw time for the Purple Knights, as Gunning's string of 1,321:27 in a row - the third-longest consecutive-minutes streak in program history - came to an end. Gunning had started the last 36 games, the most since Jess Anderson '05 started all 60 possible contests in her career. Wurzer became the first Purple Knight other than Gunning to start since Casey Curtin '15 was between the pipes on April 26, 2014.

Sophomore Alex Vincent (Rush, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy School for Young Women) notch a goal and a helper, while juniors Emily Byrne (Armonk, N.Y./Byram Hills/Dickinson) and Ashley Dineen (Somers, N.Y./Canterbury School) scored once apiece. Sophomore Annie Martin (Mattapoisett, Mass./Bishop Stang) controlled four draws, and first-year Katrina Pietz (Brentwood, N.H./Exeter) had three ground balls.

First-year Amanda Burns notched four goals and three assists for Assumption, and sophomore Sarah Reilly collected four goals and a helper. Senior Jaclyn Chirco stopped eight shots.

Reilly scored off of a Burns assist 58 seconds into the game before MacKinnon converted an eight-meter shot 28 seconds later, but the Greyhounds rattled off three straight goals in a 2:45 stretch, with Burns scoring one and assisting another. Byrne and Dineen wrapped tallies around a Burns marker to make it 5-3 with 18:10 left in the opening half, but Reilly found the back of the net 48 ticks later to kick off a 2-0 spurt, and the hosts never again led by fewer than three goals. Burns scored 45 seconds before halftime to push the lead to 9-5 before extending the advantage to five at 25:56 of the second stanza.

Vincent tallied at 24:36 and Clark off of a Moyna feed 1:18 after that to cut the deficit to 10-7, and Clark took another Moyna pass to counter an Assumption goal and produce an 11-8 margin at 16:03, but Reilly scored 2:09 later before redshirt junior Jen McDonald pushed the lead to 13-8 at 11:22. The Purple Knights held the hosts scoreless from there on three shots while forcing four turnovers, but Oliver's goal from a Clark pass with 7:26 remaining was their only offensive output in that time.

The Purple Knights host Southern New Hampshire University on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
