NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. - During its Northeast-10 Conference opener, the Saint Michael's College women's tennis team suffered a 7-2 setback to Merrimack College on Saturday at North Andover High School. The Purple Knights remain winless through two matches, while the Warriors were beginning their campaign.

The hosts swept doubles play to nab a 3-0 lead, with two Saint Michael's tandems coming closest to victory behind 8-4 losses. Sophomore Caroline Sumner (Needham, Mass./Needham) and first-year Melissa Wood (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) combined in the second spot, while junior Katie Costa (Old Saybrook, Conn./Old Saybrook Senior) and sophomore Anna Schneider (Westbrook, Conn./Westbrook) sided at No. 3.

Wood and junior transfer Margaret de Pont (Norton, Mass./Bishop Feehan) both notched their first collegiate singles victories to account for the Purple Knights' points on the day. De Pont was victorious by a 6-3, 6-1 count in the second position, while Wood won 7-5, 2-6, 10-8 in a tie-breaker. Schneider won six games during a straight-set loss in the sixth spot, and sophomore Abby Ramsay (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) did the same at No. 1.

The Purple Knights visit the State University of New York at Plattsburgh on Wednesday at 4 p.m. for a makeup of the teams' postponed match from this past Wednesday.
