COLCHESTER, Vt. - Three players won twice, including both seniors, as the Saint Michael's College women's tennis team downed The College of Saint Rose, 8-1, during its Senior Day match on Saturday at the SMC Tennis Courts. The Purple Knights returned to .500 at 4-4 overall and 3-3 in the Northeast-10 Conference, while the Golden Knights are 0-6 and 0-5.
Seniors Melissa Hickox (Laurel, N.Y./Mattituck) and Amelia Weeks (Clinton, Wash./South Whidbey) teamed for the first time in their careers, sweeping to an 8-0 victory at No. 2 doubles. Junior Margaret de Pont (Norton, Mass./Bishop Feehan) and sophomore Abby Ramsay (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) sided to claim an 8-5 triumph in the top spot, giving the Purple Knights a 3-0 edge after Saint Rose defaulted at No. 3.
After the visitors also did not field a player at sixth singles, first-year Melissa Wood (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) clinched the victory for Saint Michael's by not dropping a game during a straight-set win at No. 3 singles. Weeks won 6-2, 6-0 in the fourth spot, Ramsay followed with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at No. 2, and Hickox rounded out the victors by taking an 8-1 pro-set in the fifth spot. De Pont nearly completed a sweep for her team but lost a 5-7, 6-2, 10-8 decision in the top position.
The Purple Knights finish off a two-match home weekend against Le Moyne College tomorrow at 12 p.m.
