Walsh posts pair of double-doubles, Saint Michael's starts 2-0 at SUNY Plattsburgh tournament

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College women's volleyball team went 2-0 on the opening night of the State University of New York at Plattsburgh's Cardinal Classic, downing SUNY Canton, 3-1 (25-17, 23-25, 25-22, 25-19), and the hosts, 3-0 (25-18, 25-16, 28-26), in the Memorial Hall Gymnasium. The Purple Knights are now 5-2.

Against SUNY Canton, senior Katie Walsh (North Kingstown, R.I./The Prout School) totaled 17 kills and 11 digs, while junior Chelsey Covitz (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) added 11 kills on just 24 attacks. Classmate Jess McLeod (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) dished out 44 assists in addition to picking up nine digs, while senior Courtney Dunne (Hopkinton, Mass./Bancroft School) turned in 25 digs. Junior Cynthia Edgerton (Vail, Colo./Vail Mountain School) and first-year Kelsey Flaherty (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane) each added eight digs, and classmate Candace Washington (New Carrollton, Md./Parkdale) collected three blocks.

Walsh had another double-double in the nightcap, contributing 11 kills and 14 digs against SUNY Plattsburgh. Flaherty had 10 kills, 14 digs and three aces, and Covitz turned in 14 more kills. Junior Maddie Gaughan (Stoneham, Mass./Stoneham) had a career-high 11 kills, McLeod notched 40 assists, and Dunne totaled 15 digs.

Saint Michael's completes play at the tournament tomorrow against Elms College at 10 a.m.
