POTSDAM, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College women's volleyball team finished 3-1 at the season-opening Victory Promotions Invitational following a pair of wins on Saturday in the State University of New York at Potsdam's Maxcy Field House. The Purple Knights knocked off 1-5 SUNY Plattsburgh, 3-1 (25-21, 19-25, 25-17, 25-20), before rallying from two sets down for a 3-2 (18-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-22, 15-11) triumph against the hosts, who fell to 4-5. Senior Chelsey Covitz (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) was named to the all-tournament team.
Sophomore Candace Washington (New Carrollton, Md./Parkdale) posted a career-high 11 kills to go along with three blocks against SUNY Plattsburgh, while classmate Kelsey Flaherty (Cold Spring, N.Y./Haldane) had 10 kills and six digs. Covitz tacked on 10 kills, five aces and five blocks. Senior Jess McLeod (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) handed out 33 assists while recording nine digs and three aces, first-year Natalie Moore (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) posted 19 digs and three aces, junior Hillary Miller (Plattsburgh, N.Y./Plattsburgh/Colby-Sawyer) had 17 digs, and first-year Natalia Maccarrone (Hingham, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) added 11 digs.
In the comeback victory against SUNY Potsdam, Covitz notched 11 kills and three aces, while Washington matched the career high she set earlier in the day with 11 kills in addition to three blocks. Senior Brianna Saunders (Litchfield, N.H./Campbell) added nine kills and eight digs, while McLeod turned in 46 assists and 14 digs. Moore tallied a season-best 27 digs, Maccarrone notched 14, and Flaherty collected 12 to go along with seven kills.
The Purple Knights return to New York next weekend at SUNY Plattsburgh's two-day Best Western-Ground Round Cardinal Classic, opposing Elms College at 4:15 p.m. and Cazenovia (N.Y.) College at 6:15 p.m. on Friday.
