Purple Knights lose non-conference road match at SUNY Plattsburgh

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College women's volleyball team lost at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh, 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-23), on Thursday evening in Memorial Hall. The Purple Knights, who were playing for the second time in three nights after taking the court once in the prior 15 days, are now 3-6, while the Cardinals improved to 11-13, including 4-0 at home.

First-year Allie Statile (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) totaled 11 kills on 22 swings for Saint Michael's, while sophomore Gabby Ratte (Kula, Hawaii/Seabury Hall/Colby-Sawyer) notched eight kills on .353 hitting. Junior McKenzie McNamara (Pembroke, Mass./Pembroke) collected six kills, and three Purple Knights totaled four. Senior Catie Weller (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) dished off 20 assists, and sophomore Sarah Rodgers (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) posted 14 helpers and two aces.

Senior Natalie Moore (Burnt Hills, N.Y./Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) contributed 24 of her team's 54 digs to go along with two aces, accumulating 21 digs in the final two sets alone. Classmate Natalia Maccarrone (Hingham, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) totaled eight digs.

First-year Hunter Grotjohn led SUNY Plattsburgh with 11 kills, nine digs and three aces, while sophomore Sam Colombo had nine kills and nine digs. Classmate Sydney Gabriel handed out 26 assists, and first-year Bryanne Yasui notched 11 digs. Classmate Dani Borunda posted seven kills and four blocks.

The teams played through three early ties in the opening set before junior Megan Priester's (Dover, N.H./Dover) kill sparked a 3-0 run, giving the Purple Knights an 8-5 edge, but the Cardinals pushed back with nine consecutive points, as Borunda had two kills and three blocks in that time. Still down 20-17 in the late stages, Saint Michael's received a kill from senior Megan Mulvaney (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown East) and a Rodgers ace in a tying 3-0 run, and the visitors went ahead twice, at 22-21 on Priester's kill and 23-22 behind McNamara's kill, before the hosts scored three straight points to clinch the set, with the last two on errors.

SUNY Plattsburgh used a 7-2 run to nab a 10-5 edge in set No. 2 before Saint Michael's rallied to tie on two occasions, at 11 and 12 apiece, but Grotjohn put down three kills in an 8-1 response that made it 20-13. On the strength of first-year Jordan Dean's (Gilford, N.H./Gilford) service, the Purple Knights put together a late 7-1 run to knot the score at 22, with Dean dropping an ace, Statile posting three kills and Moore's ace tying the set, but the Cardinals netted the final three points.

The teams traded 4-1 runs to begin the third set, with 10-10 the fourth tie before Statile's kill put the visitors in front, where they stayed until back-to-back Colombo kills came amid a 6-0 run that placed the Cardinals in front 21-17. Ratte contributed on both ends during a 6-0 response, with three kills and a block, but SUNY Plattsburgh used first-year Tatyana Barlow's tying kill and three Purple Knight errors to forge a match-ending 4-0 jaunt, with Barlow and Colombo combining for a tandem block to clinch the victory.

The Purple Knights head to Assumption College on Saturday for a 12 p.m. match.
