Cross Country Squads Close 2017 Seasons at NCAA East Regional Championship

AMHERST, N.Y. - The Saint Michael's College men's and women's cross country teams finished their 2017 campaigns at the NCAA East Regional Championship on Saturday at the Audubon Golf Course. The Purple Knight women claimed 18th place out of 29 schools with 435 points, while the men were 20th among 27 with 539, competing in their first regional outside New England since 2007, in the old Northeast Regional. It was the first East Regional contested outside of New England since 1998, in Slippery Rock, Pa.

On the women's side, Saint Michael's finished two points short of the University of New Haven and 15 behind Wilmington (Del.) University while matching its lowest point total since 2014. Assumption College, which is ranked second in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) East Region poll, scored 45 points to clip Stonehill College by one point for the regional title. The Skyhawks are 25th in the nation and ranked first in the East.

During her second career regional, sophomore Abby French (Nashua, N.H./Academy of Notre Dame) took 43rd over a muddy 6K course in 24:48, while senior Roxy Withers (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) was 83rd at 25:54 during her third regional in as many years of college running. Sophomore Emma Koukos (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) capped her first year in the program in 96th at 26:29, and junior Emily Calder (Hopkinton, N.H./Hopkinton) returned to regionals for the first time since her rookie season to take 101st in a time of 26:38.

Sophomore Sam Rossi (Wilton, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) was 125th in 27:17 while senior Leah Seften (Bolton, Conn./Bolton) took 131st at 27:28, with each making her first regionals appearance. Junior Kristen Stec (Carmel, N.Y./Carmel) rounded out her team's seven competitors by placing 142nd in 28:04 during her second regional meet.

The Purple Knight men scored 539 points to trail New York Institute of Technology by just six for 19th place. Stonehill, which is ranked 18th in the nation and first in the USTFCCCA's regional poll, won with 39 points.

Sophomore Kevin Jeter (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) covered the 10K course in 36:10 to take 58th, leading his five-man squad during his second career regional. Classmate Tim DeCosta (Barnstable, Mass./Barnstable) was 98th in 38:01 at his second regional, and junior David Baird (Higganum, Conn./Haddam-Killingworth) placed 123rd at 39:21 while taking part in his third career regional. A pair of rookies rounded out the team, with junior Nathan Terry (Reading, Mass./Tilton School) 126th at 39:36 and sophomore Mitch McDonald (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) 149th in 42:25.
