This Week In Saint Michael's College Athletics

COLCHESTER, Vt.- Both the men's and women's hockey teams picked up wins over the weekend with the men knocking off Hamilton College for the first time in program history, 6-4 while the women defeated UMass Boston, 6-3, for the first time in school history. The basketball teams split with Merrimack on Wednesday before travelling to Southern Connecticut where the teams split again, as the women fell to the reigning Division-II National Champions and the men responded after their first loss of the season. In swimming and diving, both teams finished sixth at the Northeast-10 Championships at Southern Connecticut over the weekend.

The men's ice hockey team (2-2-1, 1-0 NE-10) began the weekend against Amherst at home, eventually earning a 4-4 tie with the Lord Jeffs. Despite a 3-0 second period lead, Saint Michael's allowed three unanswered goals but would still salvage a point from the contest. On Saturday, the Purple Knights made history, taking down Hamilton College for the first time in the series history. Senior captain Erik Caron (Kanata Ontario/Smith Fall Bears) completed his third straight game with a goal and two assists and junior Ryan Mero (Peekskill, N.Y./Avon Old Farms) netted three goals and two assists on the weekend. The junior goalie, Tyler Bilton (Penticton, B.C./Finlandia University), stopped 36 shots in the draw with Amherst and freshman Brendan Rimmer (Newbury, Mass./Pingree School) made the start against Hamilton, stopping 19 shots and earning his first career win in his first collegiate start.

The women's ice hockey team (2-1-1, ECAC East 2-1-1) also made history with a 6-3 win over UMass Boston, beating the Beacons for the first time in school history. Sophomore Meghan Sweezey (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield) netted a pair of power play goals, while senior Gabrielle Bourgeois (New Haven, Vt./Middlebury Union) and sophomore Kristi Reardon (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Tabor Academy) each added a goal and two assists. Sophomore Desiree Biron (Bow, N.H./Bow) tallied the game-winning goal and added an assist, while junior Melanie Cullen (Derry, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) stopped 35 shots to earn the win in net. On Saturday, the Purple Knights fell to the undefeated Hawks of Saint Anselm, 7-0. Cullen recorded 46 saves in the team's first loss of the season.

Currently tied for third in the Northeast-10, the men's basketball team (5-1, 3-1) suffered its first loss of the season to Merrimack 92-90 on Wednesday despite a career-high 35 points from senior co-captain Brian Monahan (Kinderhook, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) and career-high 20 points from junior Jon Zylstra (Uxbridge, Mass./Whitinsville Christian School). On Saturday, the Purple Knights avenged their loss by taking down Southern Connecticut, 85-79 with help from Ryan Rodrigues (Acushnet, Mass./New Bedford) and his career-high 17 points. Monahan chipped in 26 and senior co-captain James Sorrentine (Pawtucket, R.I./Saint Raphael Academy) added 22 on 6-9 shooting from three-point range to seal the team's fifth win of the season. Monahan and Sorrentine sit atop the Northeast-10 Conference in scoring, averaging 25.2 and 20.3, respectively. Monahan also leads the conference in rebounding with 12.3 rebounds per game.

The women's basketball team (5-2, 3-1) kicked off the week with a 58-54 win over Merrimack College. Saint Michael's was lead by Michelle Otey's (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) career-high 20 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman forward Logan Pintka (Niskayuna, N.Y./Colonie) was also a spark off the bench with 10 points and four rebounds. It was Pintka's third straight game in double-digits and fourth game with at least four boards. Senior guard Allison Dunn (Whippany, N.J./Morris Catholic) grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds while chipping in five points to help Saint Michael's to their fifth overall win. On Saturday, the Purple Knights ran into Southern Connecticut and their high-powered offense (First in Northeast-10). In the 84-61 loss, Senior Adrienne Carpenter (Princeton, Mass./Wachusett Regional) led the Purple Knights with a team-best 12 points.

The men's and women's swimming and diving teams both finished sixth at the Northeast-10 Championships at Southern Connecticut over the weekend. Freshman Aidan Warhall (West Haven, Conn./Notre Dame) led the men with a sixth place finish in the Individual Medley and an eight place finish in the 200-yard Butterfly. In women's diving, junior Tierney Carey (Newton, Conn./Newton) finished second in the one-meter diving event and fourth in the three-meter diving event. Sophomore Lindsey Burgess (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) also scored points for Saint Michael's, finishing sixth in the 100-yard Butterfly.
