Basketball Squads To Open Season This Weekend At The Ross With DoubleTree Classic

COLCHESTER, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College men's and women's basketball teams will open the 2007-08 season this weekend, as both squads host their annual season-opening tournament at the Ross Sports Center.

The Saint Michael's men will open play this weekend, as the Purple Knights host the DoubleTree Doc Jacobs Classic. The Purple Knights will take on a pair of East Coast Conference foes, as Saint Michael's squares off against Mercy College on Friday at 7 p.m., and Dowling College on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Immediately following the men's tournament, the Saint Michael's women will open its season will the DoubleTree Tip Off Classic. The Purple Knights will host Saint Thomas Aquinas College of the ECC on Saturday at 7 p.m., and conclude the weekend versus Mercy on Sunday at 3 p.m.

The Saint Michael's men, led by 11th-year head coach Tom O'Shea, are coming off of a 16-13 season in 2006-07, the program's first winning season since 2000-01. The Purple Knights are led by senior co-captains Brian Monahan (Kinderhook, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) and James Sorrentine (Pawtucket, R.I./Saint Raphael Academy), as the duo enter their final season with a combined 1,993 career points. Saint Michael's also enters the season with 998 victories in the program's 87-year history.

The Saint Michael's women, led by fifth-year head coach Jen Niebling, are coming off of an 11-16 season last year, and advanced to the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament for the second straight season and third time in Niebling's four years at the helm. Saint Michael's is led by senior Allison Dunn (Whippany, N.J./Morris Catholic), the squad's leading returning scorer from a year ago at 8.5 points per game, and fellow captains and classmates Adrienne Carpenter (Princeton, Mass./Wachusett Regional) and Amy Pitchers (Oxford Mills, Ontario/North Grenville District).
