Fiftieth Anniversary Celebration, "Think Pink" To Highlight Saturday's Basketball Doubleheader

COLCHESTER, Vt. - A men's basketball alumni reunion - featuring a 50th-anniversary celebration of the 1957-58 team's trip to the NCAA National Finals - and "Think Pink" Week highlight Saturday's Northeast-10 Conference basketball doubleheader between Saint Michael's College and Southern Connecticut State University at the Ross Sports Center beginning at 1:30 p.m.

"Think Pink" Week, which runs from February 8-17, is an effort by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) to assist in raising breast cancer awareness. On Saturday, fans are encouraged to wear pink clothing, and there will be "Think Pink" T-shirts on sale for $10, with all proceeds benefiting the Vermont and New Hampshire affiliates of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.

In addition, a celebration honoring the 1957-58 men's basketball team that advanced to the NCAA National Championship Game will take place at halftime of the men's basketball contest. Those from that record-setting squad expected to take part in the celebration include guards Jim Browne '60 and Frank McCaffrey '58, and then-assistant coach Ed Markey '51. There will be several alumni from the program on hand for the game, part of a weekend of planned activities.

The women's contest, which begins at 1:30 p.m., features two of the top 10 teams in the region, according to the NCAA Division II Northeast Regional Rankings released on Wednesday. Saint Michael's (12-9, 8-8 NE-10) is ranked ninth in the region, while Southern Connecticut (14-7, 10-6 NE-10), the defending national champions, are ranked eighth.

The men's contest, slated to tip off at 3:30 p.m., pits two teams looking to snap lengthy losing skids. Saint Michael's (6-14, 4-12 NE-10), which defeated the Owls earlier this season, 85-79, has lost 13 in a row, while Southern Connecticut (6-15, 2-14 NE-10) has dropped six straight.
