This Week In Saint Michael's College Athletics
COLCHESTER, Vt. - With the ski team opening up their season this past weekend, it was another busy week in sports for Saint Michael's College. The men's ice hockey team finished the week 1-0-1, highlighted with a 2-1 upset victory over Trinity College on Saturday. The women's ice hockey team also finished 1-0-1 last week. Both the men's and women's basketball teams started the week with wins over Saint Anselm College on Tuesday, but both teams had setbacks against the University of New Haven at home on Saturday. The swimming and diving team suffered a dual-meet loss to Clarkson University on Wednesday.
Men's ice hockey (6-7-2, 4-6-1 ECAC East, 2-0 NE-10) started off the week with a 2-2 tie on the road at Wesleyan College on Friday. Senior captain Chris Healey (Salem, N.H./N.H. Monarchs) scored both goals for the Purple Knights, including the game-tying goal early in the third period. Senior assistant captain Ryan Mero (Peekskill, N.Y./Avon Old Farms), junior assistant captain Dave Vorozilchak (Clark Summit, Pa./CD Selects), and juniors Kyle Marquis (Richmond, Vt./N.E. Huskies) and Jean Maxime-Legare (St. Augustine, Quebec/Restigouche Tigers) each had an assist. Senior Tyler Bilton (Penticton, British Columbia/Finlandia University) stopped 35 shots in net. In a 2-1 upset win over Trinity on Saturday, Healey scored the Purple Knights' first goal and senior assistant captain Bryan Dodge (Goffstown, N.H./Governor Dummer Academy) scored the game-winner late in the second period. Mero, senior assistant captain John Burns (Sandwich, Mass./University of Connecticut), junior Ryan Nest (Gansevoort, N.Y./National Sports Academy), and sophomore Matt Rigtrup (Upper Montclair, N.J./Pickering Panthers) all finished with one helper each. Bilton was tremendous in net, stopping 48-of-49 shots en route to the win.
The women's ice hockey team (4-11-2, 2-9-2 ECAC East) skated to a 4-4 tie with the University of Southern Maine at Cairns Arena Friday night. For Saint Michael's, senior Kelly Adams (Chevy Chase, Md./Washington Little Caps) finished with a goal and an assist, while juniors Desiree Biron (Bow, N.H./The Gunnery School), Molly DiMasi (Burlington, Vt./Burlington), and senior Shannon Murphy (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) each tallied a score. Sophomore Emily Paquin (Bowie, Md./Washington Pride) had two assists, while senior captain Jess Tourville (Baltimore, Vt./Springfield), junior assistant captain Meghan Sweezey (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield), and sophomore Kaleigh Ferrari (Millbrook, N.Y./The Millbrook School) had one helper each. Sophomore Alysia Goldman (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Hebron Academy) stopped shots in net for the Purple Knights. In Saturday's 6-0 win versus Plymouth State University, Sweezey scored two goals and handed out two assists, while Biron, and Tourville recorded a goal and an assist each. Senior Amy Schoon (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) and junior Sarah Landis (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) each finished with a goal. Murphy, Adams, junior assistant captain Alexis Regan (Canton, Mass./Canton), Paquin, and sophomore Meghan Colitti (Dover, N.H./Berwick Academy) each had an assist. Goldman (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Hebron Academy) pushed aside 15 shots in the shutout win.
The men's basketball team (6-10, 4-10 NE-10) started off the week with a 77-65 home win versus Saint Anselm College. Freshman Tyler Schilling (Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka) had career-high – and Saint Michael's season-high – totals of 26 points and 14 rebounds as the Purple Knights improved to 6-2 at home this season, and won for the first time in seven weeks. Schilling made his first nine shots from the field, and finished 12-of-15 from the floor, as Saint Michael's never trailed after halftime. Senior Jon Zylstra (Uxbridge, Mass./Whitinsville Christian School) had a season-high 16 points and four blocks for the Purple Knights, while sophomore Nate Birr (Burnsville, Minn./Saint Thomas Academy) and freshman Qua'ron Pinckney (Bronx, N.Y./Saint Benedict's Prep) contributed 14 and 10 points, respectively. Freshman Alex Berthiaume (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) handed out a game-high nine assists as Saint Michael's had a stellar 20-13 assist-to-turnover ratio in the victory. In Saturday's 58-52 overtime loss against the University of New Haven, Berthiaume had a team-best 18 points and four assists. Schilling added 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds as Saint Michael's held a 44-33 rebounding edge, but shot just 5-of-22 from 3-point land.
The women's basketball team (10-8, 7-7 NE-10) like the men's team, started off the week with a win over Saint Anselm on Tuesday, 55-52. Junior Alexis Keller (Harrington Park, N.J./Old Tappan) scored seven of her 14 points in a 15-4 run over the first 10 minutes of the second half, helping Saint Michael's erase a 32-28 halftime deficit and earn the win. Classmate Michelle Otey (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) had a game-high 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting for the Purple Knights, while senior Anna Florent (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider) scored nine points. Sophomore Marilyn Ferreira (New London, N.H./Kearsauge Regional) dished out a game-high nine assists as Saint Michael's had 14 assists and just nine turnovers in the contest. In Saturday's loss to New Haven, sophomore Logan Pintka (Niskayuna, N.Y./Colonie Central) had a team-best 18 points and six rebounds, making all eight of her free throw attempts. Keller added 12 points for Saint Michael's, who lost both games to New Haven this season.
The swimming and diving team suffered a dual-meet setback at Clarkson University on Wednesday with the men falling 134-84 and the women losing a close one, 117.5-133.5. For the men, junior Jake Stamas (Andover, Mass./Andover) took first place in both of his one-meter diving events, while freshman Allen Hubbard (Newton, Conn./Newton) collected a win in the 100-yard breaststroke event. On the women's side, freshman Eileen Mullowney (Burlington, Vt./Burlington) earned wins in the 100 and 200-yard freestyle races, and senior Tierney Carey (Newton, Conn./Newton) took first place in both of her one-meter diving events.
The ski team opened up their season with a ninth-place finish at the Bates College Winter Carnival, kicking off the Eastern Intercollegiate Skiing Association (EISA) season. Sophomore Abby Middleton (Portsmouth, N.H./Portsmouth) finished in 31st-place in the women's slalom event, while junior Lauren Fereshetian (Turner, Maine/Leavitt Area) finished 66th in the 15-kilometer Nordic race. On the men's side, junior Brad Harden (McConnellsville, N.Y./Northwood School) led the Purple Knights with a 22nd-place finish in the men's slalom. Freshman Robert "Bear" Sitzer (Lenox, Mass./Lenox Memorial) finished 57th in the men's 10-kilometer Nordic race.
