This Week In Saint Michael's College Athletics
COLCHESTER, Vt. - With the men's and women's ice hockey teams honoring their seniors this past weekend, the winter sports season is winding down and teams are making their final push towards the postseason. The women's ice hockey team went 1-1 over the weekend and closed out regular season play, while the men's team suffered two setbacks on Friday and Saturday. The women's swimming and diving team finished third at the NEISDA Championships, and the ski team finished in ninth-place at the Middlebury Carnival, both over the weekend. Both the men's and women's basketball team finished the week 1-1 and wrap up the regular season tonight at home. Tonight the men's basketball team will honor their three graduating seniors.
The women's swimming and diving team had a very good showing at the NEISDA Championship at UMass Dartmouth over the weekend. The women's swimming and diving team finished third out of 22 schools at the NEISDA Championships Friday-Sunday at UMass Dartmouth, the program's best finish at the event. Six program records were set at the meet. Freshman Eileen Mullowney (Burlington, Vt./Burlington) lowered her own program records in the 100-yard freestyle (53.09), the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.90), and the 500-yard freestyle (5:15.54). The Purple Knights also set program records in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:45.66), the 800-yard freestyle relay (8:15.66), and the 400-yard medley relay (4:20.02). On the final day of competition, freshman Katie Kelley (Jefferson, Mass./ Wachusett Regional) earned a second-place finish in the 50-yard backstroke. The team also won its first-ever Steve Looke Sportsmanship Award at the event.
The women's basketball team (13-12, 10-11 NE-10) started off the week with a 63-53 loss at home to Le Moyne College but bounced back nicely with a 63-56 win at Saint Anselm College on Saturday. In the loss to Le Moyne, senior Anna Florent (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider) had a team-high 14 points in 19 minutes off the bench, making 5-of-7 shots from the field. Junior Michelle Otey (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) had 11 points and a team-best six rebounds for Saint Michael's, which shot just 31 percent from the field in the contest. In Saturday's road win, junior Alexis Keller (Harrington Park, N.J./Old Tappan) led a balanced Purple Knights' scoring attack with 12 points. Otey added 11 points and eight rebounds, while freshman Caitlin Quinn (Oakdale, Conn./Montville) chipped in with 10 points and two steals off the bench. Sophomore Logan Pintka (Niskayuna, N.Y./Colonie Central) notched nine points and eight rebounds as Saint Michael's held Saint Anselm to just 35 percent shooting from the field.
The men's basketball team (9-15, 6-15 NE-10) also took a 1-1 split over the week by dropping the first to Le Moyne and finishing the week with a road win at Saint Anselm. In the 86-65 loss to Le Moyne, freshman Tyler Schilling (Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka) had 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field. Senior Jon Zylstra (Uxbridge, Mass./Whitinsville Christian School) added 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds, while freshman Sam Cieplicki (South Burlington, Vt./New Hampton School) netted three 3-pointers for nine points off the bench. In Saturday's win, freshman Alex Berthiaume (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) netted a game-high 25 points, making 9-of-14 shots from the field, to lead the Purple Knights. Zylstra added 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor, as Saint Michael's shot an even 50 percent (26-of-52) in the contest.
The ski team earned a ninth-place finish at the two-day Middlebury Carnival over the weekend. In the Women's Giant Slalom, junior Kendra Kenney (Medfield, Mass./Medfield) finished in 43rd-place, while in the Men's Giant Slalom, senior Tyler Haynes (Kearsauge, N.H./Kennett) finished in 15th-place. Junior Lauren Fereshetian (Turner, Maine/Leavitt Area) earned a 51st-place finish in the Women's 10K MS Classic, while freshman Robert "Bear" Sitzer (Lenox, Mass./Lenox Memorial) finished 40th in the Men's 10K MS Classic. Sitzer's top-40 finish was the first of his career. In the Women's Slalom, sophomore April Hawman (Clifton Springs, N.Y./Midlakes) raced to a 42nd-place finishm, while in the Men's Slalom, junior Brad Harden (McConnellsville, N.Y./Northwood School) finished in ninth-place. Harden, who is currently in the final spot for the NCAA Championships (17th), can secure his spot with a good showing this weekend at the EISA Carnival at Colby. In the Men's 3x5K Free Relay the team of Sitzer, sophomore Nigel Kinney (Chanhassen, Minn./Eden Prairie), and senior Matthew Alexander (Richmond, Vt./Mount Mansfield Union) earned a 17th-place finish.
The women's ice hockey team (6-16-3, 4-14-3 ECAC East) wrapped up their regular season this past weekend with a win over Nichols on Friday on "Senior Day", and a loss on the road on Saturday at Norwich University. In the win, senior Kelly Adams (Chevy Chase, Md./Washington Little Caps) tallied a goal and an assist in the final home game of her career. Junior Alexis Regan (Canton, Mass./Canton) and sophomores Kelly Rosi Losi (Milton, Mass./Milton) and Emily Paquin (Bowie, Md./Washington Pride) also scored goals for Saint Michael's, while sophomore Alysia Goldman (Ballston Lake, N.Y./Hebron Academy) recorded 22 saves in the victory. In the loss at Norwich, junior Desiree Biron (Bow, N.H./The Gunnery School) and Paquin both scored goals, while junior Meghan Sweezey (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield) assisted on both goals. Goldman stopped 37 shots in the loss.
The men's ice hockey team (7-15-2, 2-14-1 ECAC East, 1-3-0 NE-10) suffered two losses this weekend and have dropped six straight. In Friday's 4-1 loss to Bowdoin College, junior Bryan Brunton (Colorado Springs, Colo./Brooks Bandits) found the back of the net, with junior assistant captain Dave Vorozilchak (Clark Summit, Pa./CD Selects) and senior assistant captain Ryan Mero (Peekskill, N.Y./Avon Old Farms) each tallied an assist. Sophomore Brendan Rimmer (Newbury, Mass./Pingree School) recorded 38 saves in the loss. On "Senior Day", the Purple Knights fell to Colby College, 6-1. Mero scored a goal, with freshman Brady Earle (Columbia, Md./The Gunnery School) and senior captain Chris Healey (Salem, N.H./N.H. Monarchs) each adding an assist. Senior Tyler Bilton (Penticton, British Columbia/Finlandia University) turned aside 43 shots.
